MIL is 91 and has late-stage Alzheimer's and has been in a care home for about three years. She had a UTI last month which took a lot out of her but yesterday went suddenly downhill and is now unconscious. I think she is possibly able to swallow very tiny drops of water but is obviously not eating. She's on oxygen because her breathing is shallow and rapid. She's very very thin indeed. We saw her yesterday as the home think the end is near.
But they can't say how long.
I am guessing a few days at best. Does that sound likely? I am hoping she slips away gently soon as she's quite peaceful, it's like she's very deeply asleep. They said if she seems agitated or in discomfort the nurse at the home can give her morphine.

@OrangeBlossomsinthesun I'm so sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear of you and your DH's loss but I'm glad to hear you were able to offer some words of comfort. People often slip away when they're alone - my grandma who had dementia did the same, it's like she waited for my mum to say goodbye and leave and then went in her own time

@@OrangeBlossomsinthesun sorry for your loss - the last time I saw my dad I told him it was OK to go and said the Lords prayer - big deal for me as not religious but he was

Sorry for your loss @OrangeBlossomsinthesun. I'm so glad you saw her today and said your goodbyes. You can both be at peace now.

I'm glad that it was a peaceful ending, @OrangeBlossomsinthesun, and your words were lovely.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. We're in Spain where almost everyone has death insurance so it's been a long day but very smooth. The funeral company organised everything from certification, to transport to the funeral home, flowers, everything really.
The funeral is always really quick in Spain so it's been organised for tomorrow evening.

It was a peaceful end and for that I am glad.
