Pre-paid direct cremation

My OH has vascular dementia and is in a care home. The home have asked for information to assist in advanced care planning - i.e. end of life. This isn't something I can discuss with him, he wouldn't understand and it would be distressing. However, I do know his views as we had a pre-paid/funeral insurance plan when we lived abroad (cancelled). He wanted to be cremated and not to have any life-prolonging treatment if suffering from a terminal illness.

He is not yet at the end of life and is physically quite fit although his cognitive abilities are declining rapidly but I would like to make the decision now. I would like a direct cremation, where there's no funeral service and nobody attends. I have started researching and I'm finding it very difficult to make a choice from the options available.

Has anybody else done this, what was your experience and would you recommend the provider you used?

I physically visited four local funeral directors. I asked a lot of questions. I learned a lot. I also rang the local crematorium to ask how much they actually charge for their part in it all. At that time it was £900 just for the cremation process.
Via the funeral director I liked best, I have bought a direct cremation plan. The money is secure because Funeral Directors are now regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
Do some research. It’s worth the time talking to the funeral people who were very kind, polite and really happy to help me.
I hope this info’ helps.
