I would be v grateful for any insights.

I've managed to finally convince my 80 yr old DM to have a 'health check' at the GPs as unfortunately I suspect signs of dementia.

Can anyone pls talk me through what happens during the initial appointment? My DM is not aware of the real reason of our joint visit as she would have resisted. I have informed the receptionist at the GPs the reason for the appointment, so hopefully they will be subtle.

With thanks.

@Aurea - did you go for this appointment? I came on here to ask exactly the same thing, but see you got no replies...

Not sure if you'll see this, but if you do, I'd be grateful for your experiences.

I took my Nan for this doc will ask a set of questions what day is it and what year. Will give an address and ask her to tell it him at the end. Then count back from 20 to 1 and then count backwards the months of the year. Finally what's the address. My nan passed with flying colours although we were more worried about changes in her behaviour as she was being erratic

That's what I'm afraid of. I've known plenty of people with early stages, who could answer pretty much all of that, but still have awful problems. Bother.

My mum had a first appointment, and had the test that others describe. She did in fact get most of the questions right (according to my dad, who was there), but the answers she got wrong were significant enough (in conjunction with some other concerns we've mentioned) for the GP to refer her to a memory clinic as the next step. The GP warned it's a long waiting time though.
