Cost of personal care

Sorry if this has been done before .... my DH has multiple mobility and health issues and is waiting for a memory clinic referral, where, I'm pretty certain, he will be diagnosed with some form of dementia.

I have my own health concerns and am now in the position of having to provide personal care for him - showering, dressing etc. I am considering getting a personal carer in - maybe twice a week - to help with showers etc.

I have no idea how much this will cost, but everyone I talk to about it just says "it's very expensive"?? Can anyone give me any kind of ball park figure or hourly rate, before I even make the call, so I know whether it's going to be possible or not. Thank you for any help or advice you may be able to offer.

We have private carers for our mum and pay £15ph. It's more through an agency. You can get carers for less it just seemed that was a fair amount to us.

Also is he getting attendance allowance and are you getting carers allowance if you're younger than 66? Make sure you claim everything you're due. That will help offset some of the cost.

If you pay a care agency for carers, the cost is likely to be £25-£35 an HOUR. If you have savings of less than £23,000, you will be able to get financial help with the cost (you'd need to ask Social Services about it, or look online. Dementia UK will be able to give you an idea of what benefits you can claim.

You could, if you know of someone, employ someone yourself.

My parents had a private carer who came once a day, and she was £20 an hour. At some points they had agency carers when their needs were higher and that was way more expensive and much less flexible. We found her by word of mouth, so its worth putting feelers out in your community.

The day centre local to my parents had all sorts of services which were very reasonable - bathing, physio, hairdressing, podiatry and falls service - and using the day centre also gives a full day of respite from caring. Its worth looking at what is around you. There might be a carers service who can help signpost you to things
