Can you really decline this quick?

My mam is 73 and has been referred to the memory clinic.

She has been and just had a CT scan.

In the last month she has declined rapidly.

She has also fell and broken her wrist.

Now she is struggling to get words out and almost has a stutter.
She can't name certain things and has no concept of money at all.

She likes a drink and I think this has contributed to it, but she has had no withdrawals or nothing.

The last month I have noticed a massive decline, we don't even know what type she has. But can this happen?

You could contact her GP about her mood. They might want to consider an antidepressant.

Is your Dad is touch with local carers’ groups?
Does he know about the carersuk helpline on 0808 808 7777?
He will be at significant risk of carer stress/depression himself.

Flowers OP. So stressful and distressing for you all. Lots of good advice on this thread though.

There are some really good Facebook support forums around. Try DementiaAware

Thank you so much!

Today she is thankfully having a good day!

Plus I have had a good sleep! X

My dad was given a new medication and it had such a bad affect on his mobility, speech and confusion. We raised our concerns and got him taken off that and he has improved a lot. He still has other problems, which is why he was put on medication, but he those 3 things are pretty much back to normal. Has your mum recently been prescribed anything new?

gingerface40 · 14/08/2021 15:31

No nothing Jessica still waiting for CT scan results x

in my experience shock can cause dementia to worsen and or become more noticeable. The later in the day it is the worse my mum is. if she is feeling unwell it also worsens and she loses her baseline though sadly the baseline does and will change. itsa horrible disease

She's not saying she can hear music that is not there! What's that about? It's weird

my mum was making this high pitched noise and then she would say what that noise totally unaware she was the one making it strange!!

gingerface40 · 15/08/2021 20:37

I can't get my head round it x

Alcohol dementia causes lack of balance and falls, among other things. But unless she's been odd or 'a bit of a character' since she was about 50 that's prob not it - 'wet brain' starts much earlier than the other dementias.

In any case, why on earth stop her drinking now - one of life's few pleasures. Have one yourself - you'll need it.

"Too much tea" can absolutely not cause a UTI.

Thank goodness for that! I was genuinely panicking about my rather large tea consumption and getting older!

Has she had a Care Needs Assessment @gingerface40? If she hasn't I'd request one. She may be entitled to carers to help with things like taking medication and it may take some of the pressure off your DF.

If she's not got Attendance Allowance already I'd apply for that as well. It can help to pay for things like a cleaner or a gardener.

And if she hasn't given you Power of Attorney yet, I'd have that conversation as soon as you can before she gets a diagnosis. A POA for health and one for finances will make things so much easier for all of you.

Just one more thing to add on the confusion, I think that constipation can add to it so maybe feed her some high water foods like soup, melon, broccoli, jelly and cauliflower.

I would suggest an urgent call to the GP if you haven't already.

If she is under a memory clinic and you have a telephone number I would call it and ask for reassessment as things have changed very significantly.

But I expect it's an infection.

I do agree that it might be worth another call to the GP or ring 111, it sounds as though she could have developed Delirium which is a serious condition and in the link says "requires urgent medical attention".

DMIL developed it, she was convinced that there were people in the house or trying to get into the house. We phoned 111 who asked us to take her to A&E. from there she was admitted and the Geriatric Team were very focused on finding out the cause of the delirium and getting the absolute best outcome for her.

Hope you get equally good care for your DM, but you may have to push for it.

Have a read of the link on Delirium, and see if that sounds like what might be going on Thanks

Hi do we know if people with dementia are entitled to any benefits?

I am trying to get support for a day centre for my mum before she declines even more.

Does she get attendance allowance? Definitely claim and it opens up other benefits
