Seizure in late stage dementia

My mum has late stage dementia and had just been taken to a&e after a seizure.
The seizure lasted about 5 mins and she was unconscious and unresponsive throughout, and for a short time afterwards.
Does anyone have any idea what the next steps are. The hospital are assessing her at the moment, but I can't see her yet. I'm so worried.

When did the seizure occur? Was it in her sleep?

MIL has seizures in her sleep and has been diagnosed with vascular dementia last year. She now has a sleep apnea machine (CPAP) to increase air flow in her lungs during her sleep as she was having seizures during her sleep or just as waking up. She was also put on a specific epilepsy drug but I can't remember the name now.

Good luck. Flowers

There are lots of causes of seizures so her doctors will be looking at those that are easily reversible eg imbalance of medication or electrolytes.they won't want to frighten your mother or embark on complicated investigations or treatments that won't benefit her. They are very likely to put her on an anti epileptic to reduce the chance of a recurrence.

The seizure happened when the care home staff were getting her out of bed. The dementia is very advanced so it's impossible to get any verbal information from mum.
Her blood pressure was very low afterwards.
I'm not sure she could cope with any sort of treatment.

She's not really eating properly so an electrolyte imbalance could be the cause. Though not sure how this could be treated as she won't eat a lot (and taking meds is also a problem).

How is she tonight @Candleabra? Thanks

Hi, thank you for asking. She's ok. No explanation and she's settled back into the care home. It may be a one off or not. They can't say.

My mum started to have those. She was already in a home when they started. She probably had about 6 in all. She was put on meds and wore a special protective helmet thing when up and about.
