Dementia & Alzheimer's

How much should I worry about this?

Hi all,

Recently, my father-in-law has been diagnosed with fronto-temporal dementia at the age of 64 (his symptoms started about 4 years ago, we think). Neither of his parents had dementia (in fact, his Mum is still alive at the age of 92 with no signs of dementia) and neither did any of his grandparents. We don’t know if anyone in the family with dementia, let alone FTD. However, I know that FTD has a strong genetic component, with 10-20% of people with this diagnosis having a gene associated with FTD. So I’m really worried about it and I have made an appointment to speak to my GP. My husband, on the other hand, isn’t worried at all (besides worrying about his Dad, obviously) as he believes that since there is no family history, his Dad is likely to fall into the sporadic/non-genetic category. I’m prone to anxiety in general and can’t stop thinking about my husband and daughter also getting it. Does anyone know anything about FTD? Can anyone help me before my GP appointment (which is in three weeks time!)? Thank you so much.

Post should say ‘we don’t know OF anyone in the family with dementia…’ not IF. Sorry

I have no idea on this sorry. I can understand your concerns but I wouldn't let it dominate your thinking. Easy to say though sometimes Thanks
