Bed sores

So my dad is 78 and has vascular dementia. He has been in a Care Home since August 2018. He had Covid in February of this year and has been bedbound since then. He has had a bed sore brewing for some months now. Care Home have given him a hospital mattress and he wears an air boot. The bedsore is now bad enough to be being treated with maggots to try and treat it.

I wasn't aware that it had got worse.

I rang today to get an update on how Dad is doing. They told me about his treatment. I have POA fir both health and welfare and property and finance.

I feel uneasy that they have not kept me informed of his treatment. I'm not sure what stage it is, if he's in pain (they say he isn't but he is unable to communicate in a reliable way).

The care home had been closed to visits because of a recent Covid outbreak. I asked today when the home is open for visits to be told it is open again - I have had no communication to say it is back open. When I asked to make a visit they said he wasn't well enough to sit in a wheelchair and come downstairs. I told them they have told me for months he will never be able to sit in a chair again so not sure how they expect him to sit in a wheelchair for visits. I asked that there must be exceptional circumstances to visit a bedbound resident (not just for me but for others in the same situation). The care home have said they will come back to me next week.

Not sure what I'm asking but none of it sits right with me.

I feel they don't keep me updated medically with my dad. I ring weekly to get an update but rarely do I get an official medical update. I've seen him maybe 4 times since March last year. I understand the Covid situation and the restrictions that have been imposed on everyone.

I don't know. Something doesn't sit right with me at the moment.

You may be interested in this article saying that the Care Quality Commission is investigating a number of care homes for not allowing access: www.theguardian.com/society/2021/may/16/more-than-60-care-homes-investigated-for-banning-family-visits-during-lockdown

The relatives and reisdents association referred to in the article is here and has a helpline

He should not be getting bedsores in the care home, and any sore he had on going in should be improving. Is he in a care home or a nursing home? Is it time to consider a move to a nursing home (more expensive than a care home)? What do you mean by a hospital bed? One of these are beds that constantly have air pumped in and out so their always gently moving? Is he being turned every two hours? - I would expect them to be doing that. Are you about to get access to his on-line GP records so you can see what medications he's being prescribed (you will probably need to demonstrate to them that you have PoA for Health and Welfare). Skin breakdown is a srious problem and does need nurse input.

I wasn't able to see my Dad between beginning of March 2020 and end of March 2021, but since then I have had 4 pre-booked weekly visits, the last of the 4 in his room, even though he is ambient enough to come to the dining room.

DFIL is visiting DMIL in her room. He has had both vaccines and has to do a lateral flue but sees her once a week. At this point I can see no reason why you shouldn't be able to visit in the same circumstances.

MereDint how do you go about getting funding when the time comes to move to a Nursing Home?

DMIL isn't at that stage yet but it would be useful to know when the time comes.
