Respite care homes

My dear Mum has alzheimer's. She is in middle to end stage - only 72. She suffers from Sundowners Syndrome as well as Capras Syndrome. She lives with my Dad and he has stage 3 lymphoma but is quite well considering. We are struggling with Mum's psychotic episodes which seem to come on around 6pm each night and escalate until she is literally trying to kick my Dad out (she thinks he is another man who is there to hurt her and constantly asks for her husband). My Dad ends up sleeping on the sofa and usually, the next day, she has no recollection of the previous night's events. I was there last night and had to sleep in bed with her as she was absolutely petrified. Psychiatrist came today and has upped her meds (and prescribed more) pending a brain scan which has been requested. The long and the short of it is, we are struggling to cope and considering respite care for Mum in a home, to see how it goes and give Dad some time to rest. My head is mashed reading all this information on the internet. Has anyone ever gone down the respite care home route and, if so, where do we start? Thanks in advance.

Call you local authority where you are, request a S9 assessment under the Care Act 2014, tell them how desperate you are for support with your mom. A social worker will come out to complete an assessment, they usually do this in 28 days, however on most occasions it is much sooner especially if the family is struggling.
They will assess your mom to see whether she meets the criteria for respite or any other support. Your moms benefits/ pension will be means assessed and she will pay towards this. If your parents have more than £23’500 your mom will pay full care costs. If your mom has significant savings there is no need to contact the local authority you can approach local care homes yourself for respite.

Sundowners can be horrendous. Phone adult social services and say you need respite care as there is a risk of carer breakdown. Places are available, just hard to come by.

My dad went for respite care every 3 months or so and it enabled my mum to cope for much longer than would otherwise have been possible.

Thank you .... sorry, it's been a bit manic. I have got in touch with the local authority for a care assessment and someone will be in touch soon.
