Male contraceptive injection - would you have it and would DW/DP trust you?

Not sure if this has been discussed on MN but I have been reading about the trials of testerone injections for men to stop sperm production - being presented as a possible 'Male Contraceptive Pill'.

I know us blokes like the technical stuff so here is a good 'How it Works' article on the Male Pill''

Here is a Guardian article that poses some interesting questions.

OldLadyKnowsNothing posted a few days ago on her DH taking part in trials of the 'Male Pill'.

There are side effects including acne, weight gain, prostate-gland growth and abnormal liver function and a higher sex drive.

So would you take it as a man and would your DP/DW trust you?

Of course, I would like to hear the views of MN women too.

DW would trust me, but not sure if we would trust it.

"Acne, weight gain, prostate-gland growth and abnormal liver function and a higher sex drive."

Do you promise I can have all of these, please?!

I would trust DP 100% it would be really good for us if he could use a contaceptive pill or something since i can't and our only option is Condoms (whci hwe don't have a problem with but it can be less hassle to just bypass that bit!)

However i would be really worried about the side effects. Prostate Gland Growth what will that do, will it make Prostate Cancer anymore likley? (Sorry if that is a dumb question i know not of these things!)

A higher sex drive, god i would never be safe!

DH would and I would trust him implicitly

EvenBetaDad · 09/05/2009 12:13

Yes my DW would trust me implicitly as well but probably not trust me to remember to take the injection without being able to watch me to confirm for herself - I am sometimes forgetful.

The side effects put me off. Enlarged prostate is not good and is what leads to older men not being able to urinate properly and then needing an operation that can lead to impotence.

I think also like PadDad I am not sure we would trust the injection to actually work. It only gradually reduces sperm count and then it can still fail in some cases. Maybe it would be OK as a sort of belt and braces approach used with other contraception but that beats the objective.

TBH - I am not sure it wil take off and not because men refuse to take care of their own fertility but because of the downside risks of it not working or it causing health problems. Plus I think the alternatives are actually so much easier and about the same risk (e.g condoms).

Hmm.

The prostate thing is worrying. DH wouldn't take it in that case as his father died of prostate cancer and he would constantly be worring about in the injection increasing his risk (his father died 'young' as far as prostate cancer deaths are concerned and so DH's risk factor is increased).

It's about time men took some of the responsibility, I can't wait for my dp to have it!
