Mens help needed about 'the snip'

DH has admitted thatthis is something he needs to do.

As all other methods of contraception have been ruled out for one reason or another.

however he has asked to have some time to get his head round it.

He says if he was unconscious for the procedure - no problem he would have it tomorrow. But it's the being awake part that he is finding hard to come to terms with.

Dad's how long is reasonable for him to 'get his head round it' - he has had 6 weeks now.

He has'nt approached our GP or anything yet, and I think it might help him to get some actual facts rather than go on hear say and what he see on TV.

DP had it done 3 weeks ago.

He did say the actual minor op was very scary, but he was able to walk slowly out of the GP surgery to the car and spent the next 48 hours in bed. He only needed paracetamol for the first 3 days. He was back to normal after about 5 days and is perfectly fine now .

But we can't go without contraceptives for probably another 4 months as he has to be tested . I can't wait for him to get the all clear, the thought getting pregnant again scares the life out of me. I am so pleased he had it done.

Well done to DP, its like walking with a bad case of rickets!! Enjoy the freedom

I was asked to consider this a few years back (thank goodness I didn't because the "asker and I split"). While looking into the procedure, I found myself being put off.

One of the men who had it done told me that the person preforming the procedure inject a needle into my bollox and inject some local anaesthetic in to kill the pain. Just that part put me off.

Then to add to misery, my neighbour had the snip done and for a week he walked with wide legs. His bollox went blue (well black if you asked me) for a few days and the sack was well swollen.

Finally, I was reading in the sun newspaper (not the most reliable source of info - I know) that a tiny percentage of men loose their sex drive. I quiet like my sex drive, even though there is no one to use it on at the moment and I simply don't feel I can take the chance.

Each to their own, I don't think I could go through that procedure. To be fair, if I was in a relationship, I would b upfront and be clear about what I wanted....not think about things for a while.

I know it's changing the subject of the post, but what's the problem with getting a coil fitted? or perhaps better asked, what are the reasons that coils can't be fitted?

I had mine 'done' after second child.

Operation was simple and over very quickly. It did hurt a bit, they pull out the tube to cut it, and the left one hurt when they did the pulling. (sorry if TMI)

It hurt on and off for about 6 weeks afterwards. After about 4 weeks I sh*t myself when I found blood in my semen - called the helpline and they sighed and said 'its fine'.

Suffered from a bit of an ache after orgasm for a couple of months, but since then nothing.

Haven't regretted it - no change in sex drive, it all feels like normal. I'd go for it if you think you're definitely unlikely to want more children.

Hope this helps.

Mr Rollmops says....

I had it done in August and after 4 tests, I'm still not tadpole free. Mrs Rollmops is a baltic uber babe so the gun is fired quite a lot shall we say. No old ammunition in the magazine !

I've got past the frustration stage and am now quite proud that my DNA can still beat the surgeon's scalpel and cauterizer. The problem is that I will be tested twice in April and if I'm still not clear then I'll be done again. Another week of lying on my back with a black and blue sack

Why do they have to make the sample pots small with rough edges, it has to have been designed by a woman

Rollmops · 26/01/2009 21:00

Mr Rollmops adds....

I reckon the "didn't hurt a bit" posts are being written by the ladies in an attempt to get their men to say yes.

The anaesthetic (sp ?) was no worse than you would get from a dentist (but in your nuts), the op was fine and opium based painkillers from a friendly doc mate helped. The sensation afterwards was like having been kicked in the cods by a donkey with a grudge.

In spite of the above, my advice is get it done chaps. My good lady had a c-section so getting the snip was nothing in comparison. If your partner had a conventional delivery then just be grateful you're a bloke.

I had to have 2 x snips as the first one failed (bugger). Second one, I was in hospital for 3 days, but after the first test, completely negative. Had second test today and waiting for the results.

Best choice we made due to circumstances.
