Officially i am a mum but am reporting on DH...

I saw him clean his boots today, it was the first time i have EVER seen him clean his (rugby) boots, and i think that he only did them today because they are new and i complained about their price

needmorecoffee · 09/02/2008 19:54

nope. The mud flakes off into the sports bag eventually. If ds wants them clean then ds will have to do them

Elphaba · 09/02/2008 19:58

I don't do the boys' - they sit in the porch till the next time they are needed - by then the mud is dry and you can just bash them against the wall to get it off

Spidermama · 09/02/2008 20:41

Ok thanks. I don't think I'll bother or nag him to. I'll just hide them 'til next time.

Yes, but probably because I earned my pocket money for years by cleaning my dad's rugby boots. So I have managed to get it down to a fine art and I actually find it quite therapeutic

JackieNo · 09/02/2008 20:45

Yes, I do. How old do you reckon DD has to be before I can trust her to do it and not get them filled with water, so they're too wet for her to wear for training, the day after the game?

southeastastra · 09/02/2008 20:47

don't think dads do. i did my sons for ages. i sort of liked it, but my dad did national service and was always obsessed with cleaning footwear and sort of passed it on to me.

Dont be daft

Triathlete · 16/02/2008 00:03

Nope.

Your son (or daughter) should do them. If s/he jibs and objects, ask him/her "How are you going to be motivated enough to win a match/race/trial/heat/final, if you're not motivated enough to clean your boots/bike/motocross bike?"

We let them dry (standing on newspaper, in the general vicinity of a radiator if necessary) and then clack 'em, like Kerrymum.

JackieNo, you can get plastic boots you know - possibly sweaty, but they're not worn for long after all, and then they can be worn again next day if necessary.

The bit I hate is the laces wrapped around underneath the foot - they get really crunchy and disgusting.

UnquietDad · 16/02/2008 12:10

I used to have really long laces when I played rugby at school and the only way I could stop them flopping about was to wrap them round the bottom. Agree, they used to get horrible.

nicena · 10/04/2008 11:40

My dh played a lot of soccer when he was younger , his comments were to respect your property and clean them weekly , wash laces and take some pride in your own gear....he was a captain of his state rep team and from a long line line of players ,dad uncles grand father etc.most of which played for their state or country.

MarsLady · 10/04/2008 11:40

Nope! DS1 has to after all... they are his boots!

windygalestoday · 10/04/2008 11:44

yes i clean all 3 of my sons football boots after EVERY use - i didnt realise this was unusual until the p.e teacher referred to ds1 as squeaky,,,,,i thought he was being funny and he said no thats his name cos his boots and kit are always perfect ......i even have a special knife to dig between the grroves and a coarse wooden nail brush to get in all the crevices......spare laces are the way to void 'crunchyness' we have 3 pairs of laces per each pair ......

Very rare when I played rugby, it used to be a great source of amusement seeing other people's (rugby) kit and the state of it in the changing rooom before a game, whether it had been washed the week before and so on. I knew guys who did not wash their kit throughout the season as a matter of pride.
Another took the teams rugby shirts home with him once to wash took them down the launderette and never bothered to dry them so the next weeek we had these manky shirts freeezing cold and all smelly as he hadn't used any detergent.
Oh those were the days...[wistful emoticom!]

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 10/04/2008 14:48

windygales I am very impressed! My father in law was immaculate with his sport kit even cleaning the heads of his golf clubs.
The only thing I ever looked after properly were my cricket bats, I still have four of them now even though I do not play any more. It drives Mrs BGD barmy seeing them around the house.
