I had my discs and pads replaced by Kwik Fit today plus oil change and oil filter total £169.
I think the cost of materials for all this is about £70 maximum but I don't like crawling under the car in wet weather or taking the wheels off etc so I think the £100 labour was worth it for me.
I'm sure you could find someone to do it a bit cheaper.

WOW I am amazed at the prices some people have been quoted I have recently bought a secondhand car for the first time in many years so I am looking into the cost of keeping the vehicle roadworthy
I just bought tyres through the internet with fitting saving me nearly £30 on the tyre depot rates and have already started looking at brake discs and they range from £20 for a vauxhaul astra upwards even with labour costs it should not be more that about £80 say £100 with VAT
Do a little research before heading into these 'general' multinational places as they are there to 'encourage' you to buy.
As a single woman go in confident and know your car and don't be afraid to walk away remember an MOT only says the car was fit on that day at the time of visit.
build up a good relationship with your local MOT station and garage and check the prices they need repeat business but the multinations make much of their income from fleet vehicles so walk ins are fair game to make money
In my experience local mechanics, they will help and advise you I am looking forward to having to maintain my own vehicle again - brakes are the next job but I have got a mechanic who will check them over once the job is done
If you can put a cot and childrens toys and furniture together brake discs are a piece of cake
sorry about the rant but it annoys me so much to hear of people being ripped off.
Good Luck

NEVER USE KWIK FIT. Never read a good review yet plus they were on watchdogs youtube it. Take your car into a local garage always plus your supporting your local tradespersons.

Have been told I need "rear brake rework" what does this mean?

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/09/2017 18:06

it could mean anything

For comparison which may be useful to some;

Ford did my rear brake pads (not discs) for £120 incl parts labour and VAT last week. Ford S Max.

If the car has drum brakes in the rear and disc brakes in the front, its typically only the pads on the disc brakes that need to be changed often.

I would call a local auto parts supply store and ask for pricing on replacement pads for X car. They'll have a range of prices for different pad types, brands, and "premium" levels, etc. Take an average of these and you have an idea of how much the parts should cost.

Auto shops will typically charge you the price of the parts (with a markup) plus labor. Here in the states it's typically $90 an hour. When I do my own brakes it takes me about an hour. So if they are asking £500 for the job that seems a little unreasonable.
