ice hockey

it's in the blood.

we went skating on new year's eve for the first time since we arrived back in the UK from Canada.

I bought ds (4) a support frame which allows him to learn to skate confidently. It's basically a zimmer frame for the ice. I could have made £££ that day as we certainly turned some heads with the contraption and I had guys coming up to me asking where I got the thing.

I was impressed with the Skydome ice rink in Coventry... really impressed. Bloody expensive though.

Anyone elses ds/dd play ice hockey at all?

They don't start them very young here as far as I can tell (ds was 3 last year in Canada and I had other parent's pushing me to enter him into bloody fast track intense lessons for preparation for hockey... obsessive? yes)

I would imagine it's seriously expensive here.

my dh used to play ice hockey. He's insisting that the girls go and learn to skate this year (2.5 & 1.5?!?!?) I don't see how he'll work that as I can't come and help as I have never set foot (or skate) on an ice rink!!! I do think that the youngest would be a good bet as an ice hockey player - she's seriously fierce!! (and fast). I hope they do get into it - it's a fab sport at the very least I'm looking forward to going to watch some matches with them.

My DP plays all hockey and is a follower of the Nottingham panthers, so there is no escape for our son. He has a hockey stick and helmet already. DP and his sas wanted to talk him over christmas on the ice but we ran out of time - he is 18 mons. SO I don't think it will be too long before he goes. And yes it is shocking what it costs

18 mths? I'd link you the skate frame I bought for ds but I just can't find it. Strange, I bought it at a local sports shop and it's brilliant but I can't find it anywhere on the net or ebay....

in holland they use old dining room chairs as frames.

DaddyCool · 04/01/2008 10:54

yes, chairs are ok but they flip forward. traffic cones are great!

I found the common one "here shopping.canoe.ca/shop/product--catId_1001302__locale_en__productId_3298581.html"

... but the one I have it plastic and much much better as it's a full (and feather light) triangular frame that never falls over.

I can so see my little one bashing people with it though!!! I would quite like to learn to skate myself first. Don't want to be mummy sitting at the side lines - I refuse to use a frame though!!!

dp and sons used to go and see the london knights at docklands arena. they moved now i think - it's such a shame they loved those outings.

chrissnow · 04/01/2008 11:21

Oooh I'm all fired up for an ice hockey match now!! Really miss going. We couldn't get pils to babysit for these as the one and only thing they won't give up for us is going to ice hockey themselves!!! Now the Los are a bit older I think we can all go.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/01/2008 11:22

my niece used to play - now just watches (Nottingham Panthers)

I played Ice hockey for 10 years juinior then ladies it was SERIOUSLY expensive the kit and skates put me back about £600 (i had expensive skates tho) and it use to cost £15 every traning session £10 for a home game £15 for every away game.
And because nottingham has soooo many teams our traning with the ladies use to be at 11pm because it was the only time any rink was free.

bogie · 07/01/2008 15:57

oh andwe have just started talking ds (24 months) we got him some skates from the us and he goes to the toddler session they do in notts

the term 'ice hockey' to me will always sound odd and a bit limp!
yes I know it's the uk and all that, but....

my brother is a big player and was keen to start his son who is 2, but son really hates it - there is a danger of starting too early and turning them off. I think he should have waited (formal 'lessons' I mean)

love hockey!

agnesnitt · 11/01/2008 23:33

Love the game, but have only caught one match this season. Gutted.

My daughter would make an excellent goon-esque winger. She's short, fast and lippy

It was ten years ago that I went to see Boston Bruins vs San Jose Sharks at the Fleetcenter.

It was excellent, I have never eaten as many donuts since.
