Do Your Kids Like Spicy Food?

I have had someone round at weekend who thought i was frankly insane at offering up her child a curry along with ours.

With her (and others) comments i am not so sure now that this is a normal thing.

I just give mine kiddie versions of our meals. If we have a chilli they have a separate less hot version (they adore the tortillas and all the extras), if we have a curry they get a nice creamy korma (same again with the nannas) and they like stir fry as well except they do pick out the veg they don't like out if it.

Surely others out there eat these things to?

It's not all beans and 'Happy Faces' all week is it?

micci25 · 16/12/2007 00:15

depends how spicy for mine she likes mild curries and spicy crisps, noodles etc but nothing too hot!! she says it makes her tonuge feel funny! bless her! it still doesnt stop her dad from offering madras every time he has one though he seems to find her reaction amusing! she starts licking my trousers! not sure why she thinks this will help!

DS4 has always eaten everything- we don't do kids food- but I remember once he must have been about 2 and we didn't offer him the Indian pickles with his curry and he was most put out, insisited on having it, made a funny face when he tasted it then asked for more

Magrat · 16/12/2007 15:51

yes mine eat what we're having and have since they were toddling.. if we're having curry they have curry .. in fact we go out for curry, chinese, thai etc

favourite meals are chilli con carne and chicken in black bean .. they happily scoff tandoori chicken .. none of these dishes are that mild IMO

EricScrooge · 17/12/2007 00:07

Nice.

I guess i will ramp up the spice content as they get older.

The wee one already likes stuff spicier than her older sibling - but i guess that might just be down to individual tastes rather than conditioning.

One does, one doesnt. Mind you the one that doesnt, doesnt much care for any food.

jezzemxmas · 17/12/2007 00:24

I very rarely cook separate meals.
Our kids eat the same as us and they love spicy food and lots of garlic.
Even when they were really small we would give them tasters of different types of food (including spicy)
They are not fussy eaters at all.
It makes mealtimes much much easier

Ds eats what we eat unless he has a special request and we have time to accomodate.

He's 3,8 and at the moment the special request is actually "can I have some spicy for my lunch?"
That translates into thai sweet chili & tomato squid casserole!!! He can't get enough.

skerriesmum · 17/12/2007 00:53

Naan bread is yummy but shockingly high in sodium!

zippitippitoes · 17/12/2007 01:08

i am starving

OverRated · 17/12/2007 01:12

DS (2) eats everything I do - that includes curry, fajitas, chili and various other spicy foods. He was weaned on spicy food. And has never had a Happy Face

Agathon · 03/01/2008 00:08

In Bhutan the children are weened on chilli peppers. Yak's cheese curry is the national dish and children are trained on the chillies as they get older. Parents keep presenting hotter and hotter chilli peppers and positively reinforcing whenever one of the little red-faced, eye-streaming dears manages to force one down. The result is that they will not serve their hotter dishes to foreigners.

Something to do with the cold climate apparently.

I have forgotten what the point to all this was...

Gursky · 03/01/2008 00:10

Get with the programme Agathon - does your dc eat hot food?

Agathon · 03/01/2008 00:14

He yums it up until it gets too hot and then rejects it. I have now found the level and know what I can get away with. (DS=2yrold).

BroccoliSpears · 03/01/2008 00:15

Yeh, mine eats mild spicy stuff.

Like all things, some children will like it and some won't. I am passionately against this weirdo idea some people have about "adults' food" and "childrens' food". Makes me blardy furious when you go to a restaurant and there's a menu full of good food - spag bol, roast, pork chops, salads, soups... and then a childrens' menu full of reconstituted fried crap. Sausages, fish fingers and a plain pizza for the veggies .

DS 7 months helped himself to my garlic naan and chicken jalfrezi last night, that's OK as long as he stays away from the Cobra......
