40th birthday present for male friend

If you can stop talking about shagging JK Rowling for a second can you help me find a present for a friend I've known for 18 years please? No idea what to get him. He's my closest male friend. When he was growing up he liked 70s disco, motorbikes and used to be in the 1st team for football at University. He is now a senior NHS Manager with 3 kids (if any of that helps.....).

isn't there a consortium of people trying to buy a football club. Could you buy him a share in that?

PetitFilou1 · 25/07/2007 14:51

Ipod is a good idea - maybe I should give him the one dh gave me that I never wanted and don't use (don't think he'd be very happy with me though if I did that.....)

Looks fun

NoNickname · 25/07/2007 14:56

My best 40th birthday present was a case of wine!

Probably cost a bit more than £50, but you can try something like Virgin Wines and use one of their money off (£20 or more usually) offer codes that you can find all over the internet.

JK Rowling.

Bagdad · 26/07/2007 18:52

If he doesn't fancy JK Rowling, then perhaps something from the IWOOT website? www.iwantoneofthose.com

EricL · 28/07/2007 10:32

40 means buying something from one of those mail order catalogues full of stuff you didn't realise you needed. Something nice and sensible and practical im afraid.

sleepfinder · 08/08/2007 19:15

what about a swiss army knife? brings out the boyscout in everyone and will keep him occupied for several hours.

ejt1764 · 08/08/2007 19:18

I bought dh one of these for his last birthday - and he was well-impressed!

www.iwantoneofthose.com is a fab website - and their delivery is quick!

Daddster · 09/08/2007 21:52

I'm with EricL - got to be something useful and practical - life's too short for plasticky gimmicky crap (especially by the time you reach 40).

I know of no y-chromosome person who would not be grateful for a Leatherman. Much better than a Swiss Army knife, sleepfinder, IMHO.

Can't say I agree with the suggestion for the iwantoneofthose site - some of the stuff is OK, but a lot of it is nicknacks, ornaments and the annoying "men's toys" which get used once and then end up at the charity shop... a woeful squandering of resources.

lilolilmanchester · 09/08/2007 22:39

yeah, would defo go with the leatherman if he's that sort of guy.
Otherwise, magnetic bottle opener which sticks to the fridge plus case of beer, or snazzy cork screw and/or case of wine.
Alternatively, tickets for concert/show/sport venue.
Men are bloody awful to buy for!

PetitFilou1 · 13/08/2007 12:41

Thanks all, just wanted to say that a) JK Rowling is a personal friend of his already(yes really!) and b) I got him a case of flash frozen steak from Donald Russell (his wife is a vegetarian but doesn't mind cooking it for him). I was inspired when he came to our house and was in raptures over the steak dh cooked for him. Hope everyone approves........
