DH keeps talking about Satellite Navigation systems for the car....as it's his birthday in two days time I presume he was dropping very big hints about what he owuld like...not sure what product is good and what is crap though...Any help, most greatfully appreciated...and I presume (knowing him !!) that it'll be expensive....

(sorry, not actually a bloke but am quite bloke-like with these things )

Steppy1 · 10/10/2006 17:37

...don't mind at all...thought it was a blokey kind of thing !!! But in these days of equality of course women should be up to date on the technicalities of modern appliances ...including sat nav !!

We have the Volvo built in SatNav, but also have a TomTom full European version (so can go in any car) & it is fab. Got us to France & all around last summer, and works on Postcode entry. Flashes at you if you are speeding, beeps if a speed camera coming up etc etc.

Mojomummy · 27/10/2006 20:06

we've just got a tomtom & it's fab !! I think it's the latest one & cost £200.

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:10

We have a tomtom, it covered the UK, and europe and we can get downloads for the states if we want them.

I have found it invaluable when driving without another adult in the car. I also now don't have to map read when i am with dh in the car, great improvemnet for me as I suffer from car sickness!
the tomtom is very detailed and so easy to use....idiot proof!

Skyler · 27/10/2006 20:26

Tomtom 500 here. Is excellent although has turned itself off inexplicably twice and so now we have to keep a pin in the car in case it needs resetting. Grrr. Still think it is fab though.

MwaHaHappyDaddy · 30/10/2006 15:16

TomTom is the name everyone knows. Very user friendly.

If he's a gadget afficionado, get a Garmin or Navman. Better mapping, re-routing just a little less trendy.

SoupDragon · 30/10/2006 15:36

Ah, but TomTom proved to be no match for a 7 year old reading the signposts on a recent trip to Leeds Castle... It said turn left, the 7yo said "the signs said right!". He was right (although I suspect DH put the wrong postode in to start with)

smeeinit · 06/11/2006 17:41

ive got the navman 320 and its shit to be honest!
its gets me from a to b but thats it! no extras or anything and as i live practically on top of the m1 it takes me on there wherever i need to go.................which would be gr8 if there wasnt shit loads of roadworks going on there at mo!!

hub2dee · 07/11/2006 20:23

Soupy - often postcodes just point to a generalish area, or are the postcode for deliveries 'round back' when you need to park in the dragon's car park etc.

If you will drive in UK / Europe and the States I'd recommend the TomTom 910. It is loaded, but some of the others (not TomTom yet) have integrated traffic information receivers. These work via data reception on FM, so you don't need a mobile / GPRS data connection etc. The TomTom sell this FM receiver thingy separately or else you can subscribe to a TomTom Plus Traffic Info service on your mobile.

elburroburro · 10/11/2006 21:57

Yeah, I bought a tomtom 710 today. It looks very easy to use. It took minutes to set up and knows where home is. Haven't used it to go anywhere yet though. But it keeps telling me to turn around and take the next right.

BumMum · 10/11/2006 22:14

DH's got a garmin, he say's and I quote... like all sat nav it takes you the quickes route but not always the best.. and it has good traffic reports....

Basicly... its better than nothing

I like it as I can ring up and say ETA darling, and he gives me a time...

onlyjoking9329 · 10/11/2006 22:20

i had a pda with a sat nav on it and it was good, but nowhere near as good as my tom tom one, which is fab fab fab

Gingerbear · 10/11/2006 22:27

We have a Navman 520i, excellent, slimline (you can put it in your pocket like a calculator) and accurate.

hub2dee · 12/11/2006 18:59

The form factor of the Navman's (also the Nuvi) is possibly better than the TomTom IMHO as it sits nicely in the pocket being kind of like a packet of ciragettes on steroids size-wise. The TomTom is like a wedge-shaped pot of yoghurt size so not quite as comfy in a jacket / bulky in a handbag if you want to take it with you when you park.
