Need something big

Finally time to trade in the car and looking for ideas on what to get next. The old one was a mid 90s Jeep G Cherokee. Great but reliability of a 99p watch. Next one must take 2 big people, three little people in toddler seats, a double stroller, a single stroller, and still have room for the weekly shopping. It would be nice if there was something charming about it and did not break down every 100 yards. price sub-10k. Any idea guys?

We have a VW Sharan, it's been a fantastic car, the removable seats are genius, there isn't much you can't fit in it - we've been to the tip today with a double bed in the back and the seats only folded down, not even removed - it also turns on a sixpence and has been very reliable, it also does 55 MPG.

SIL has a Zafira, the bootspace is rubbish and fuel economy isn't as good as ours.

We need similar and DH been researching and his suggestion would be Volvo XC90. Seats 7 so ideal for when yours DCs have friends back.

Thanks MD&S. Can I ask which year it is?

Thanks for the idea tesrocks. However I think they are a bit pricey no? I try to avoid spending too much on cars, helps avoid knashing of teeth and bashing walls with head when I sell them again and realize how much money just disappeared...

Does anyone have a Chrysler Voyager they care to comment on?

We paid £10k for ours 4 years ago when it was 3 years old (53 reg), you can get one like ours for around £5k on autotrader so could get a much newer one for less than £10k - ours is the top spec with sunroof/air con and built in child seats etc.
We tested a Voyager but they are very big and aren't as nice to drive as the Sharan - the Sharan, Ford Galaxy and Seat Alhambra are all identical so you could probably get a top spec Seat for less than either Galaxy or Sharan.

DH reckons a Ford S-Max would be the one to go for as the safety features are so good, (according to his top gear mags).

Ive got a Dodge Journey, and LOVE it ;-)
Same company as Jeep/Chrysler. Chrysler Grand Voyeger is next on my list, but the one I want is £45k.

You could get a Journey now, only 1 year old for around 10k, so still 2 years warrenty, and they seat 7. I get the world and his wife in mine.

VW Transporter?

thisisyesterday · 24/10/2010 20:52

i have a volvo v70 which meets every single one of your criteria

Thanks Malificence. I'll check one out and see if it could work for us.

Monkeyface £45K for a minivan??!! What is the world coming to, I don't know. A friend has a Dodge Journey as well but I wasn't convinced by the build quality. Maybe it was just his but it didn't seem very well put together?

Hi yesterday, thanks for the idea. I will check out V70s as well.

Now... anyone interested in buying and old Jeep with no reliability, awful fuel economy and very unreasonable running costs? :)

LWB Ford Transit?

We looked at the Ford/Seat/VW combo as well as the Kia and Toyota options. Finally settled on a Hyundai Trajet. We felt like we got much more car for the money. Our garage always comments how robust it is. The space is good as even with all three rows of seats up and occupied, there is still space for luggage behind the last row.

Each seat can be removed/folded individualy which makes it very versatile.

Hyundai don't make this model anymore, so second hand is the only option, but because it wasn't a particularly well known car, there are some good bargains available. 2 litre diesel is the best option.
