What size for first proper bike?

I need some advice please! I have a very tall 5 year old, 117cm last month with an inside leg measurement of 53cm (today). He’s been whizzing around on a balance bike for ages but really needs a proper bike now. I’m conflicted on whether to get a 16 or 20 inch, measurement wise it looks like 20 is more sensible but then is it going to be too big for him to handle as he’s just starting out? Or should I go for an 18? Although have read in a couple of places this is a ‘useless’ size, not quite sure why to be honest.

Budget is going to be around £150 mark so if anyone has any recommendations too that would be great! Tia

I would look at bike club. You pay a monthly subscription and can swap for free after 18 months

I would go for a 16 inch as the bigger the bike the heavier it is thus making it harder to balance. If you would consider second hand look for a frog bike or woom bike.
If looking at new I would get a decathlon bike- they have aluminium frames so relatively light but far cheaper that premium brands.

Would recommend an isla or a frog, you’ll be able to get something second hand for that price and they’ll be light which makes learning to ride soooo much easier.

If his inside leg measurement says he’s big enough for a 20 id go with that. Hes only a couple of cm shorter than my 7 year old who moved from a 16 to a 20 at Christmas.

if you get him a nice light bike and he’s good on the balance bike he’ll be off in no time. No stabilisers!
