They are banned on the public highway, the problem is the police don’t do much if annything about them. It sounds to me like it wasn’t a legal e-bike that nearly knocked you over but one of those powerful illegal ones that are favoured by the Deliveroo/Uber Eats etc guys as well as the people who snatch mobile phones. Seeing as these bikes are illegal on public roads and cycle paths, I don’t think the police should sell them on if they do confiscate them. The police here have on a couple of well-publicised occasions had days when they’ve confiscated and destroyed some of these bikes, but it’s not been many and it doesn’t seem to have made much difference to the number of these things in my home city.

If you've estimated the speed correctly then they are banned now.* *Ebikes in the UK and the EU must be pedal assist only and only electrically assisted up to 25kph (about 15.5mph). Obviously you can ride them faster than that, like any bike, but they are not legally allowed to provide assistance above that speed. Anyone riding an ebike that provides assistance above that speed or doesn't require them to pedal is breaking the law. There is already perfectly good legislation - the police do have the power to confiscate illegal Ebikes and have them crushed. (Of course they can't sell illegal goods!!) If you don't feel the police in your area are enforcing the law correctly then I'd contact your local Crime Commissioner and/or MP to raise the issue. But the law is already there.

They are banned and should never have been sold; same goes for e-scooters. I don’t understand why they’re not banned at the point of sale.

They’re sold because they can legally be ridden on private land, as if the people buying them have extensive private estates.

It was an eye opener in Australia, so many kids have them and unlike pushbikes, dont need to wear helmets. And they ride on paths (where there are paths) because apparently its too dangerous on roads.

They are illegal and banned for use unless on private land.

Who would the police sell these confiscated bikes to? Because I am pretty sure Police and public would not want them back out there being used again next week...
And how would this money go to 'injured cyclists'? Some kind of crash compensation scheme - in which case everyone would line up and want their £50 for a 'cycle crash'.

I think you need to think more carefully before you spout something that is inaccurate and ill-thought out.
