Bikes talk to me

hellotomrw · 30/07/2025 19:50

Just got my son his first bike and wanting to collect him from school on my own (womens) bike which will also involve having a seat on the back for his 2 year old brother. What kind of bike should I be looking at? I feel lost

Are you talking about a bike for you or him? As it sounds like you both have a bike from your post?

c3pu · 30/07/2025 20:00

What kind of riding do you intend to do? Road? Gravel?

soupyspoon · 30/07/2025 20:01

OP wants a bike she can put a child seat on, so that she can take a 2 year old on her bike while going along with her school age son on his own bike

Is that right OP?

I genuinely thought that this thread was about you believing bikes were communicating with you!

OverlyFragrant · 30/07/2025 20:01

A hybrid or town bike

Me too! My dd is a high level cyclist and she regularly strokes her bikes so this seemed quite reasonable to me.

hellotomrw · 30/07/2025 20:16

For me! I bought him a frog

Road and path mostly

If bikes are talking to you, you might want to seek some psychiatric advice.

I had something similar with eggs, but I think I've cracked it now.

Springadorable · 30/07/2025 21:24

Unless you are above average height and weight for a woman, you need a heavy bike to carry a toddler on the back or it will constantly try to tip up. Which is then a pain to cycle in itself. Is a cargo bike an option? Otherwise I'd consider a lightweight bike with trailer.

Same.

I am mildly disappointed but there’s a relief too.

lljkk · 30/07/2025 21:30

Unverified quite possibly total nonsense Google AI says that avg UK woman is about 5'3" tall & 72 kg. I am taller than that and lighter, I did not have a heavy bike or need one to handle my kids in a bike seat on back.

However, it reads to me like OP will not be confident cycling with raised centre of Gravity that results from having a 2yr old (11-13 kg?) on back of her bike.

I would have said a hybrid bike for you, OP. What budget? Are you happy to buy 2nd hand?

hellotomrw · 30/07/2025 22:51

Happy with 2nd hand. I used to cycle a lot but that was ten years ago now! I’m average height but a bit fat after having two kids so not average weight 😂😂😂

It’s worth going to a local bike shop - they’re usually very helpful and will let you try out different bikes to see what’s most comfortable. Assuming you’re mainly cycling on roads rather than muddy paths, I’d say a hybrid is a good option, but it’s worth going to the shop and seeing a few before you decide. Even if you want to buy second hand, you can get an idea of your options from the shop and then look online for something that matches up.

lljkk · 31/07/2025 09:43

Plan to Try a few local bike shops or indeed ask on your local facebook pgs which LBS will suit a novice or even has 2nd hand bikes. Some LBS are awful, sorry to say (!!)

We have a lovely co-op bike shop in Norwich that would give you personal attention to getting a good setup, for instance, and they sell 2nd hand bikes for fair prices.

Me too , and I was wondering what kind of conversation I'd have with my old bike ( there would be a fair amount of cursing! )

I agree with pp , go to a couple of local bike shops and ask their advice , there is a great one in Manchester, ancoats called Pop-up bikes , they are very good and not at all pushy .
