Safety when selling a high end ebike?

KatyMac · 29/03/2024 06:47

Sadly the ebike my brother built me is not suitable for me; so I have to sell it

It doesn't seem a facebook marketplace type item and eBay has fees/delivery etc

So finding a place will be tricky

But if I get a buyer, how do I ensure they don't whizz off on it, with a car you are the registered keeper, but round the corner and off into the back of a van would be so easy!

Keeping their bank card/car keys is an obvious choice but so would them buying a cheap/stolen set of keys or whatever

Any hints or tips

You could wait for an eBay listing weekend, often you get an offer (you have to activate it) for 70/80% off fees. Then select payment by PayPal and local collection only. That way yes you will pay some eBay fees and PayPal fees, but the person would have had to pay by PayPal prior to collecting.

Don’t do this. The person who buys the bike can claim not have received it and you’ll have no way of proving they did, they can then claim their money back from PayPal and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. It’s a common scam.

KatyMac · 29/03/2024 07:19

I'd forgotten that scam; didn't ebay do something with a code which said they had the item?

I've asked for a quote

You cant sell things now as collection and have only cash payments.

You have to use a system set up by Ebay where the buyer scans a code with you on the doorstep.

This doesnt work when you leave your OH to manage the sale and come home to find your item sold and taken but no code scanned in. Luckily nothing came of it.

Aposterhasnoname · 29/03/2024 08:51

Ooo, I didn’t know about the code thing. That’s much better.

KatyMac · 29/03/2024 09:50

The cycle exchange says no

I sold an ebike by this same method, it was fine

I dont know what you mean by high end though. I got 600 quid for mine, just a bog standard folding e bike.

Is it one of those ones where you bought a normal bike and someone fitted a motor to it? Im not sure they are considered high end.

KatyMac · 29/03/2024 12:12

No this is specialist, it's fazua motor

The spec is
Fazua ride 50
Shimano Alpine 8 (32 hole) rear hub and gear shifter
DT Swiss Onyx (32h) front hub
Stan's Crest MK3(?) rims
Sapim Race spokes
Sram PC1 chain
SKS Mudguards
Shimano XT disc-brakes

& it's 17kgs

I would put it on ebay with a long listing, 2 weeks or something, high reserve and swallow the fees. You'll still get good money for it and then its off your hands

tanstaafl · 29/03/2024 13:10

Search eBay for ‘fazua ride 50’ first, remembering to include ‘completed listings’ in your search.

that’ll give you an idea of whether people are selling them and what the prices are like.
can you prove you own it? Receipts for the things you’ve listed above?

as it has a lithium ion battery, you might have to charge more for shipping.

Thanks

Bad day at work so I'll leave the decision making until after the weekend!!

I'm sorry to hear it's not suitable, I remember a few posts about it, and your previous bike. How did you eventually get it over from Sweden?

There are actually some specialist e-bike selling groups on FB Marketplace.

I might be interested. Looks like the fauza bit is an add-on ebike bit for a normal bike? What frame is it on? Make/size/colour?

Coldupnorth87 · 30/03/2024 17:14

There's a woman's cycling recycling group on FB. Really good group, mostly clothes but some bikes.

TheOneWithUnagi · 30/03/2024 17:26

My husband used pink bikes to sell his. And the person who bought it didn't ride it to test it (but if they want to then keeping driving licence / keys would work - you would expect someone to turn up in their car or van to collect it anyway)

I echo PP and do not use PayPal. Use bank transfer and make sure you check your own bank account via your phone before they ride away.

KatyMac · 30/03/2024 17:31

Umm I'm still collating the info @ForestDad but

It's similar but a better spec and lower weight to the white bike pic I'm hoping to attach

It's a small frame and it weighs about 17kgs, I have the original seat post but I've taken 11cm off to try and fit it to me & currently it has a handle bar extension bit that could be removed if required (& no seat)

I'll have to check how many miles it's done - it's all lock up atm and I'm at work tomorrow, but I'd imagine less than 50
