DH has mentioned he could do with a pair of those overshoe things when he goes cycling- he goes out in all weathers, yes even in this freezing icy weather. He’s a size 41 and wears those cycling shoes that ‘clip’ onto the pedals- you may of guessed I don’t cycle & know absolutely nowt about the kit or really anything to do with it!

I’ve had a quick look on Wiggle (he has got stuff from there before) & Treadz but there’s so many & mixed reviews. Can’t afford £££ but willing to pay up to around £30 inc delivery. Can I get a decent pair for that?
TIA

Absolutely!!

I don't spend more than £20. I expect them to last a season (usually need them from October - March/ April). I wear them most days (cycle most days). Salty water from the roads gradually trashes them, likewise, other crap off the roads. Alternatively if he's a mountain biker the mud and walking in them will gradually destroy them over the time period they are necessary. Hence, no point spending more than £20.

You want thick neoprene. Ideally Kevlar reinforced area around the cleat and toe which makes them last a bit longer (unlikely beyond a season of heavy use).

'Waterproof' is pointless. They won't be. The water will get in the shoe through the sole and the cuff.

Go for black. Anything else will just look pants very quickly!

You want one that covers the entire shoe - they'll come up to just above the ankle bone/ below calf muscle.

I can't recommend a brand. I've had them all over the years. They all do what they are supposed to.

If he wears winter boots (I do) you may need to size up the overshoe as boots are much chunkier.

I notice wiggle are selling their own DHB brand 'extreme weather neoprene overshoe' for £20. That'll do just fine.

morningstar15 - Thank you!!! You’ve been a massive help.

DH goes on road & off road so he does a bit of both. Scrap that, he does a lot of both!

In these freezing temperatures he comes home with ‘icy toes/feet’ So I’m guessing these overshoe things, keep the feet warm, if not necessarily dry?

Now & then he’ll threaten to get me a bike, but he’s really not selling the idea to me…besides the last time I had a bike, I was 11. I would be dangerous if I got on one now!

My DH seconds the DHB ones from wiggle - and he loves a long ride in this sort of weather (just did a 200k wearing them, nutter)

The DHB ones in small (£20) are out of stock on Wiggle (DH size 41) would a medium do or would they be too big? Or they have a pair at £16 in small, would they do?

Another option if you haven't already ordered is Planet X. They have their own brand Carnac neoprene overshoes for £10.99 in stock in all sizes as far as I can see. Some cyclists are a bit snobby about Planet X as their stuff is quite cheap and it's not a "trendy" brand, but I've had some great stuff from there over the years, including the best pair of winter gloves I have ever worn, by a country mile.

DH also used to get icy toes in winter. Over shoes helped a bit but didn't solve the problem. The only thing which worked in the end was a pair of electric heated socks. Expensive but worth saving up for if it continues to be an issue.
