Where to buy shorts for those of larger arse??

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for somewhere to buy padded shorts for those of larger arse?

I'm an 18/20, 20 would be more comfortable but I'm struggling so much to find any that an 18 might have to do! Also preferably bib shorts but waist shorts would be ok if not.
I've been trying to get out with DH who is an avid cyclist a lot more and I'm currently wearing a pair I got on Amazon in desperation last year but they are crap. He normally buys his from Wiggl or Leisure lakes but neither have anything suitable for less than £50 which I can't really stretch over right now. I'm wondering if I need to buy mens instead but the shorts I currently have the padding is a completely different shape to DH's which I assume would be an issue in other brands too?

Wiggle DHB go up to an 18. I find DHB very true to size.

Rapha and Assos also. I have a friend who’s a 22 and very tall, she has both brands, so I can only assume they would offer something suitable.

Have a look on VeloVixen (women only kit website). They’ll certainly offer brands in 18-20.

Lastly eBay! Once you know the brands to look out for you can save the search to favourites and pick up stuff as and when. If anyone starts regular cycling they are likely to lose weight and shrink out their kit, some of which will find itself on eBay.

Sorry ignore my previous post about DHB, rapha and assos (although search eBay) as I just spotted your budget. Do try Velo Vixen. End of season on any site you’ll get some bargains. I’ve picked up absolute bargains on: Tweeks. Merlin and Sigma Sport.

You could also try Facebook selling groups - there’s a buy, swap, sell cycling one which has a huge membership.

Yeah pads in men’s shorts are very different given their bits, pressure points and sit bone widths are very different to ours. You could of course try some - would DH’s fit you? You may of course find the pad to be very comfy!

Pads are a very personal thing anyway. I swear by some brands, others just don’t work for me.

One thing that is important is the correct size, as it’ll hold the pad in place and minimise chaffing/ slippage. Also worth pointing out, just in case, go commando. They aren’t designed to be worn with underwear, I’m screwing my face up in perceived pain at the thought. A tiny bit of chamois cream can help too. I don’t use it and I knock out 2-4 hours solid in the saddle 5 times a week. I don’t have a need as I’m super comfy down there.

These undershorts are less than £50 and you could just wear some regular , loose shorts on top

I have some of their 3/4 length leggings and they are very comfortable. And I have a large arse

@WhiskeryWoman wow you are fab! So many places I hadn't heard/thought of you have been a real help.
Typically after checking the Wiggle website for months waiting for DHB ones to come back in stock in a size 18 (I've been checking about twice a week since February although admittedly hasn't checked since last Friday) I start this thread and all of a sudden they are back in stock!! £50 was really the max I wanted to pay but don't mind paying a little more when I know they will be good quality and last well so I've ordered those. I'll definitely be keeping the rest of your suggestions in mind though for the future.

You can’t go wrong with DHB. I’ve had several pairs of their Roubaix winter bib tights. They survived four years of regular use (2 or 3 rides a week) autumn - spring. I’ve got some summer bib shorts which are into their third year of fairly heavy use and still going strong. I’ve been impressed with the quality. They’re excellent value for money.

Both shorts and the tights are the red pad ones. I did have some cheaper ones with a pale blue pad and I wasn’t so impressed with the quality. They seemed to made of a thinner Lycra and the stitching came undone.

I’m a size 16/18 and wear men’s shorts mainly. Assos and Endura in xl. You’d probably find endura within budget but not assos. Endura do different levels of pad, think the Xtract range is their budget one with a 400 pad which I find ok for rides of up to 2 hours. Then they do a more expensive 600 pad and up.

Another place is decathlon....never had anything from there but hear good things.

pomacentrus · 06/05/2021 07:38

I'm a similar size to you. Alternative approach I use is gel/comfort saddle and standard unpadded aports leggings which are easier to source in large sizes. I really like the quality vs price at Decathlon, try Kalenji Run Warm Tights in size 3XL (£19.99)

minniemomo · 06/05/2021 07:49

I have a gel seat (£7.99 from Aldi) and wear Sainsbury's, I have both sports shorts and leggings from them, £10 each. They wash really well and tumble dry a bonus

BookWorm45 · 11/05/2021 20:54

Corinne Dennis website, good quality and lots of larger sizes.

You're probably sorted now, but I've found D2D are excellent for inexpensive, decent quality cycling gear in larger sizes.

Flab (fat lad at the back) have some nice stuff in all sizes, and they have a women's section, Ive got a jersey but haven't tried their shorts yet as I didnt want to buy without seeing the chamois and they don't have any photos or info on their website.
Liv have some larger sizes but I don't find them particularly great.
Also noticed recently that mountain warehouse sell padded shorts, cheaper.

Jofergo · 25/05/2022 11:02

Fat lad at the back.

just got a pair. About to buy a second.
have revolutionised cycling/spin for me.

Shopgirl1 · 15/11/2022 22:21

I find cycling brands incredibly small fitting. I’m a size 10/ 12 and need L in assos, they are missing out on half the market.
Le col better, I’m an M there.
Decathlon worth a look - but be careful, some of their shorts are completely see through!
