While ds is only 10 he is already 5'2 with a 28" inside leg. He also weighs around 9 stone so is wearing small adult clothes and I think he probably needs a small adults bike.
He's had and now outgrown an Islabike. I know we'll get most of the purchase price back on this which is just as well as we are not a family who cycle a lot.
The question is what next? An adult Islabike is £600 Shock, the upside being that I could use it when he's not and it's light etc etc but before I spend that enormous sum, is there something else he could get?
It needs to be lightweight as he's not the most balanced/ co-ordinated and I need to lift it into the carrier or into the car.

Are you looking for drop handle bars or straight bars? (You don't mention which Islabike you had).

If you get yourself on to some of the "Bicycle Parts for Sale" Facebook groups (there is also a "Bicycle Parts for Sale - Scotland" group - there may others around the UK) you could maybe find someone's old (small) racing bike to buy. There are also Youth Cycling Racing groups (don't know if your ds is interested in that) which was where I sold on ds' old bikes as he grew out of them.

Some kids never cycle
Look on the buy and sell pages for nearly new bikes at a fraction of the cost

DS bike still had the spikes on the tyres-£50 rather than £400 odd new

Since you don't' cycle much anyway, Evans Pinnacle (women's hybrids, small so you can get right size) or Halford's Carrera Subway range. I was looking at those recently for my 5'3" tall DS. Both around £300-£350. There are some Dawes hybrids around same size.

If you Really don't cycle much then something cheap out of the freeads!

As small framed mountain bike, good brand such as Giant, Trek etc might do him. Try some in a shop so you know what size he needs before searching ebay/local ads. Decathlon bikes are not bad either. I would steer clear of Halfords /Apollo you never hear anything good about them. Also second hand bike shops or police auction might yield a small adult bike. One thing for sure he has more growing to do!

yeah, my 14yo is still on a Luath26 & I think he won't let go of it until he's at least 5'6" or 5'7" when he can ride my bikes. So that's that!
