I've started road cycling and doing around 30 miles each time.
I'm wearing dhb trouser/tights but still get welts on my bum! I'm wondering if I will ge used to going out and whether the dhb, Gore brands that are more expensive it are worth it?

I would like to know as well. I wear padded cycling leggings, have a woman's seat on my bike, plus a padded overseat, and I still get really uncomfortable.

I think I really need an armchair on my bike Grin

Depends where the discomfort is. More expensive brands of shorts have champhered (sp?) edges which reduces rubbing around the pad edges. If you are getting rubbing on your flaps the angle of the saddle might be the cause. Try getting a female specific bike fitting.

I have been riding bikes for 30 years. I have been out this evening and am sitting here in my Rapha shorts and Gore jersey. The shorts were £90 in the sale but were so worth it! IME, you get what you pay for with shorts*. It’s worth investing in a good pair. Also, saddles. The saddle on my road bike is a good leather saddle that I have moved over from my last 2 bikes - it’s moulded to the shape of my bum, i’m keeping it! Also try [[
“chammy** cream” - basically bum www.google.co.uk/amp/amp.timeinc.net/cyclingweekly/fitness/training/chamois-cream-explained-139014%3fsource=dam chammy cream]], basically bum lubrication cream. There are various to chose from, as in that link, or you could go cheap n cheerful - Bepanthen before, Sudocreme after.

One last thing really helps - just getting the miles in.

  • good brands at less eye watering prices are Altura and Endura. ** a very long time ago the padding in cycling shirts was made of chamois goat skin. You applied the cream to to padding to keep it flexible.

I don't get sore. I think I just need a more comfortable seat. Can you recommend one BikeRunSki?

I have only just started riding my bike again (I am only a fair weather cyclist)

BikeRunSki · 06/05/2018 23:28

Hi Lonicera Well, my saddle, the one that moves bikes with me, is an old, but much loved Selle Italia. But saddles are a funny one, because everyone’s bottom and genital area are different, , everyone’s hip bones are different spacing.,it is definitely worth getting a women specific saddle, and I do like a leather outer for long term comfort and durability.
However, I havn’t bought a saddle for 20 years, so I can’t help with any specifics. This article may help thougg.

LoniceraJaponica · 06/05/2018 23:31

Mine is a woman's specific saddle, but probably not right for me. I will look at the link tomorrow.

I wish there was affordable women's cycling clothes in a size 22/24 as cycle but I struggle terribly to find clothes for women that size and men's are hopeless as the paddings in the wrong places but it's the best I can find size wise Confused

I enjoy cylcling and as I have a mild disability that effects my balance on 2 feet and means I struggle in a gym setting it's a safe one for me. It's just tough wearing blokes kit

BikeRunSki · 07/05/2018 13:26

MissCherry are you aware of the Fat Lad (and Lass) at the Back brand. They go up to a 50” chest or size 26 in their women’s kit. Decent stuff. Not cheap, but not ridiculously priced, and decent kit. The branding is very subtle too!

tadpole73 · 07/05/2018 15:27

Thanks BikeRunSki I shall invest in some chamois cream

Yep but I'm pretty hard up and can't afford £65 for a pair of pedal pushers and £60 for a top 🙁. For us 2 that's a couple of weeks food shopping and then sum.

It gallingvthat up to a 16 I could buy in Bargain sports shop for a tenner each....I know they are cheap but as I currently only cycle once or twice a week and not far as I need to loose weight they don't need to be expensive
