We bought a d lock magnum which lasted about 8 months & our chain one has died at 13 months

What should we be looking at?

It depends when and where you want to use it? No point having something that weighs a tonne if you need to carry it in your back pocket for cafe rides.

For example I have a lightweight cheapo cable lock I bought in Wilko’s for the odd occasion I briefly leave my bike in a public place. It isn’t too heavy to carry in my pannier and is sufficient as a deterrent. If I intend to leave my bike longer I also carry a heavy duty one like this: www.wiggle.co.uk/abus-granit-steel-o-flex-1000-100cm-cable-bike-lock/ I also use this on the bike carrier. Both are still going strong after 10 yeas regular use.

In the shed I have very heavy duty chain and extremely robust padlock. The chain is attached to an anchor point. Both are still fine after several years use.

If my bike is on the bike carrier on the back of my vehicle I use a heavy duty chain with alarmed padlock and very heavy duty separate lock. This enables the frame and both wheels to all be locked on.

Kryptonite New York locks are very good.

I use the Abus Granite X Plus. It's heavy but no one's nicking my bike.

If i leave the bike in a lock up, i take a steel cable to use with the lock.

guessing you've probably found a lock by now but if not my DH has this one and its always worked well for him, its pretty heavy and robust so feels really reliable. www.hargrovescycles.co.uk/abus-bordo-6000-75cm-black-lock.html
sorry for the late post, hope it's helpful

+1

They come with a clamp that attaches the lock to the frame when not in use so at least you don't have to carry it in your bag.
In tests the only thing that got through it was a battery operated angle grinder which at the end of the day will go through any lock.

The recommendation is if you have a half decent bike you should look to be spending approximately one tenth of the cost of your bike on a decent lock.

One thing worth more than even the best lock is leaving your bike where it is well observed.
When I go to my nearest town there is a bike rack outside Nero's coffee shop and right next to the alfresco tables.
There is nothing bike theiving scrotes hate more than being watched by a dozen pairs of eyes while they go about their vile business sussing out bikes and their locks.
