It feels like it has got stuck, or gone back on itself, and has reset to basic mode, despite me slogging away at it for over a year. Is that how it ends?

It never ends 🤣
I’ve switched languages several times, even tried maths, and I’m still there after 850 something days. Do you subscribe or are you using the (insanely irritating) free version?

InFreeFall · 10/05/2026 18:56

I suspect you have answered my question for me - it is the insanely irritating version. It feels like every day I cover 'the horse is eating no meat today'.

Perhaps it ends when I get annoyed enough to stop?

Which level are you on? I found that after level 50 it gets more challenging

PickledMuffin · 10/05/2026 19:01

I’ve been on Dutch for 6 years now, and it’s giving me pretty much the same lessons everyday. I don’t have the free version though, so assumed i’ve reached a certain level of what they can teach? So I’m now
learning other languages, also chess and Maths.

It depends on the language. They don't all work exactly the same. They do all seem to have their own obsessions, though (Owen's parsnips in Welsh, drunk, angry parrots in Latin, Grillpartys in German...)

They're not all the same length, either - I reached the end of Welsh, Latin and Dutch, so I just have daily refreshers now, but French, German and Spanish are on-going. I did buy a grammar book to go with Dutch, because they don't really explain grammar. (I do real life Welsh lessons, and I've done the other languages formally, too.)

They do all move on in time, but yes, they do get into ruts.

My levels are 11, 12, 40 and 118 😇
They are all infuriatingly American (apologies if you are American!) and some work better than others. All are highly repetitive and don’t offer the most user friendly vocabulary. But still I do it. The subscription is really low, I think, as you can swap between languages for that single price which at £48 is lower than advertised. I started to pay after month 15 and enjoy it much more now. Which language are you doing?

Yes, the American is really irritating - I’m doing basic Norwegian & it’s full of movie theaters & being from the USA!

I did Italian Duolingo for a few years but what made the biggest difference was signing up for online classes with a human tutor & a group of fellow students.

Depends on the language. Some courses are better than others.

If your language happens to be German, there are two much better free apps: DW Learn German and the VHS apps.
