Like a computer keyboard.

No luck with an online search, as it keeps trying to explain what to type in to get the computer to translate.

I’d use un clavier?

EBearhug · 14/02/2025 01:16

Clavier, according to recent Duo lessons.

eurochick · 14/02/2025 01:26

Clavier. I used to work in a French speaking office.

I saw that online, but it bothers me. I'm hesitant because of the obvious association with a piano keyboard.

But doesn't the English word 'keyboard' come from the piano keyboard ... i.e. music keys?

What has producing letters got to do with metal keys, as in lock keys.

It's definitely 'clavier'.

'Clavier' is used for both the electronic piano and the computer peripheral.

It's the same in English.

clearsommespace · 18/02/2025 04:17

I mean in English we use keyboard for both.

I use Reverso, It is free and you can also install it on a phone, It also shows the word in context .

You do know that just because it's the same word in one language doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be the same in another language, right?
I wish I could think of a good example. Hm. For me, "kid" can refer to a child or a young goat, but I'm pretty sure they don't use the same word for both in Italian.

Yes, thank you I do know that. I haven't yet met a French parent who refers to their kids as 'chevreaux' 😉

What I was trying to say is:

In French 'clavier' is used for both the electronic piano and the computer peripheral just as in English the word keyboard is used for both.

You could use 'clavier d'ordinateur' if you need to be more specific.

JanglyBeads · 23/02/2025 01:44

Open but this is the same term because they're describing the same thing - a board with keys on, to use the English terms.
Kid and kid are related but in a much less direct way (having googled)

Often as not the obvious association is correct.

www.etymonline.com/word/key gives the musical meaning of 'key' as originating from the Latin clavis , and then being transferred to typewriters.
