I was at a restaurant this morning with my DD called Amélie and the server said that it meant lily pad or water lily in her language, which I believe is Sanskrit.

However I can't find anything about this online and I've not heard this before.

Can anyone confirm if this is true? If so, I think it's lovely and may get some artwork with these on for her room :D

Sanskrit is used in ceremonial and religious ceremonies. A quick google search reveals only around 14,000 people use it today so it’s extremely unlikely to be your server’s native language. Amelie sounds French to me.

Oh yeah, it's definitely a French name and I know the meaning in French, I was just interested to hear it had a meaning in another language.

Hmmm, she said Sanskrit but maybe I misheard? I have no knowledge of the language unfortunately.

Many ancient Indian names have Sanskrit origins, and babies are named based on these Sanskrit meanings. They don’t have to speak the language but are taught what their name means by their families. OP, your server might have thought you were referring to the name Amili, which is in fact a Sanskrit name.

Really interesting, thanks @Frumpyfrau
