I love letters, words and lexicons, probably goes without saying here.

Would anyone with a keyboard in a non-Roman alphabet language like to share a sentence? I'll start. Bonus points for anyone who can translate into English. Mine is easy!

Είναι όλα ελληνικά για μένα.

Ukrainian rather than Ukraine!

Interesting you said that!! I'm considering doing the online Linguistics masters with Birmingham uni!

Oh I might have a look at that, sounds great!

dottypencilcase · 30/01/2024 20:52

@Melassa has it @LauderSyme and @picklesandcucumbers! It's Urdu (very similar script to Arabic and Persian) and it says "I'm tired" or transliterated as "Main (I) thakk (tired) gayi (gone/become- feminine) hou(n) (am)"! 😂

In reflection I think you are right and it does say Ukraine!

I'm very very rusty!

ColinRobinsonsFart · 30/01/2024 21:06

@ApocalypseNowt - I always wonder why I speak it better than I write? Hand writing is my most awful - reading handwriting it and writing it. I have special books to help with formation - like we had as 4 yr olds!

Yes I find the same! I think it's because most stuff is spelt phonetically so once you know the letters you can read and speak fairly easily. Writing (or typing!) a different alphabet requires a lot more brain power!

Fizzadora · 30/01/2024 21:23

I am quite envious of all your linguistic skills. Mine only extend to very basic (failed) 'O' level French.
Is 63 too late to learn a new language do you think and which one is easiest to learn?
I still have a yearning to go for British Sign Language and try and do something useful with it. Maybe this is the year.

Never too late, of course. I'd choose a language I can use with someone in real life - it's a huge advantage.

BIWI · 30/01/2024 23:23

Never too late, and also very good for your brain - it's one of the things that's recommended in any article that you read about dementia. Along with doing puzzles like crosswords and sudoku.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful posts 😍

Google Translate shows me many more fabulous languages. I had no idea there are so many Cyrillic tongues and the swirly scripts of the Indian subcontinent - and further East - are wonderfully graceful.

Ah I lived in Japan many moons ago and the Hiragana here takes me right back.

My offering:

الأسبوع المضي، ذهبت الى الشرق الاوسط.

Is this one in fact Arabic?!

Such an interesting thread!

LauderSyme · 31/01/2024 01:40

@mizu It also looks similar to Pashto?

LauderSyme · 31/01/2024 01:46

@icingonthecake7 Is your language Tamil?

Hunting for yours I discovered two other languages with very pretty scripts, which I have never hitherto heard of, called Kannada and Malayalam.

OP posts:
mizu · 31/01/2024 07:28

@LauderSyme it is Arabic. Same alphabet as Farsi / Pashtu.

LauderSyme · 31/01/2024 16:33

@mizu Oh dear feeling my ignorance here. I thought the only language that uses Arabic lettering is Arabic. Thanks for the info!

@LauderSyme yes, Tamil - considered the oldest living language and very beautiful both written and spoken.
