Finding a Spanish Short Story by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón

The story involves a farmer/peasant who identifies the thief who has stolen his pumpkin/squash because he knows all his squashes like children and he can fit the stalk to the fruit.
I think the title might be something like cheques and stubs.
About 25 years ago this story was played somewhere on BBC radio. I recorded it and lent it to a friend who liked it so much she’d like to have a copy.
Does it sound familiar?
What would be a good method of finding what collection it might be in?

It’s called El Libro Talonario.

That’s brilliant. I’ll see if I can find the collection it’s in. Thank you @GirlInTheDryShirt

No worries! It’s widely available online in Spanish, I’m not sure how easy to find English translations are though…

I’ve ordered ‘Historietas nacionales’. She wants it in Spanish. It seems surprisingly cheap! I have some time before her birthday if it’s the wrong collection (or turns out to be in English or something.
