Would you write:
“I am touched by you taking the trouble...”
or:
“I am touched by your taking the trouble...”?

Grammatically, I think either would be correct, but is either one regarded as better?

You

stinkingbishop · 02/12/2020 12:41

I THINK, because 'taking' is the gerund, the subject needs to be possessive. So the 'more correct' phrase would be 'your taking the...'

But no one is going to shoot you for the first option. And sometimes when I've used the gerund with a possessive in an essay, it's been corrected, and I have had to bite my tongue very, very hard indeed Smile

You

Gerund! Who knew? I thought I was good at grammer

AuntieStella · 02/12/2020 12:44

'Your' because 'taking' is a gerund (a verb form which functions as a noun)

SirMoanalot · 02/12/2020 12:45

Your.

SirMoanalot · 02/12/2020 12:46

My taking of the trouble not me taking of trouble so your taking and not you taking.

IsolaPribby · 02/12/2020 12:47

How about:
I am touched that you have taken the trouble.

lazylinguist · 02/12/2020 12:48

Gerund! Who knew? I thought I was good at grammer

Grin Did you mean 'grammar'?

Yes, technically it should be 'your', but colloquially 'you' is more normal.

Thank you very much for the replies! What do you think of this?

“This could lead to him being noticed”
Or:
“This could lead to his being noticed”.

Both are considered correct nowadays - using your/his in your examples I would class as being slightly more formal/elegant.

This might be helpful. brians.wsu.edu/2016/05/19/gerunds-pronouns/
