Does one "wield" an arrow?

A report on the BBC says a missionary was shot by an "arrow-wielding" tribe.

Surely one doesn't wield an arrow? Wield means "brandish", and similar words.

I have no problems with the term to "fire" an arrow, even though before guns the expression was to "loose" an arrow.

But wield?

I would think that you wield the bow, not the arrow.

I agree, doesn't sound right does it. Wield a sword, wield an axe. I'm having a think about what would fit better now.

An arrow toting tribe? Doesn't sound menacing enough though.

tribe armed with arrows (at a pinch)
