What is l’auriculaire ?

I think it's something to do with the ear, and all dictionary translations that I can find agree, but it doesn't make sense in context.

The passage is about a girl who can open locks, possibly by magic:

Elle introduisit l’auriculaire dans la serrure du tiroir et, Clic-Clac, elle le fit pivoter dedans d’un coup sec. Le tiroir s’ouvrit.

L'auriculaire is tle little finger/ pinky.

Thank you! that makes more sense. Why on earth did the dictionary say it was related to the ear? Perhaps one might use the little finger to 'scratch' in the ear?

It can also mean "pertaining to the ear" and in medical texts, it can also refer to the atrium (heart).

But outside of medical texts it is most likely to mean little finger!

It is the finger small enough to clean your ear out with. The others are pouce, index, majeur and annulaire (because you put an anneau on it)
