Why do Americans spell aeroplane "airplane" but don't spell (eg) aerobics "airbics"?

Why do British people call it an airport not an aeroport?

More seriously, both aerobic (in the scientific sense) and airplane/aeroplane are both relatively recent coinages (late 19th and early 20th century) but they developed independently of each other, so there isn't a logical reason to expect the totally consistent usage of the Greek aero rather than the English 'air' (or the Latin!) in words to do with air.
