Could anybody please decipher the writing on this picture? It was given to us by a Chinese guest at our son's wedding, so it probably says some or all of the date and venue and the names of the bride and groom. We have lost touch with the lady who painted it so I can't remember exactly what it says, but it's a beautiful picture and it hangs in our lounge so I look at it often.

Any Mandarin speakers?

The Chinese Characters: 乙未年夏理惠写意
The English Translation: An abbreviated style free-sketch painting by Li Hui, Summer of 2015

Let me explain them in details:

乙未年 (Year of Yi-Wei): A year name in the accient dating method by Chinese Era, which coverts to Year 2015 in modern calendar. The use of this type of year name indicates that the painter is a personal of certain level of knowledge and attainment in Traditional Chinese culture.

理惠 (Li Hui): Apparently this is your friend's (the painter) name.

写意:Abbreviated style free-sketch painting. It's one of the two major Traditional Chinese painting styles, the other one being the fine brush realistic painting.

This is a nice piece of painting work that conveys a feel and sense of health, tranquility, bloom and growth. All good wishes.

Hope you will find these information helpful, and wouldn't mind that I put a link to our translation service: www.actranslation.com/mandarin/mandarin-translation.htm

If you get more small Chinese stuff like this, I can still help you translate them for FREE. Smile

Thank you so much for your help. The characters say something completely different to what I thought!! You are correct as to the name of the painter. You are more than welcome to include the link to your services and I wish you every success.
