The plural of oeuf is oeufs isn't it?

I went to a French conversation class for the first time today. It is aimed at people who have a bit of French and want to improve for holidays. We were talking about what we have for breakfast and the teacher said the plural of 'oeuf' was 'oeux'. I was surprised as I had been sure it was 'oeufs' but thought maybe I'd got it wrong all these years. Googling seems confirm that it is indeed 'oeufs' (maybe she got confused with 'yeux'). Or is there a French region/dialect where they say 'oeux'?

It's definitely oeufs, pronounced "euh". The "fs" is silent.

BikeRunSki · 21/04/2016 18:11

It's "Oeufs"

LowDudgeon · 21/04/2016 18:32

The F is silent???

The S is silent, so oeuf & oeufs sound the same - is that what you meant? (Both sound like erf)

I beg your pardon, gastropod Blush

I did French A level in 1969 & I've been saying it wrong ever since Shock

The solo g is right. You would write oeuf and oeufs.

You do pronounce it completely differently.
You can hear the F in oeuf.
You can't hear the F in oeufs and it's pronounced 'eu'

Un oeuf - pronounced erf
Des oeux - pronounced er

ClaraM · 21/04/2016 18:58

hmm - wrong - it's des ouefs, pronounced er! Sorry......

Hygellig · 21/04/2016 19:58

Thanks, I will draw her attention to it next week. She pronounced it 'deux er' but definitely wrote 'oeux' rather than 'oeufs'' on the whiteboard.

I had always pronounced it 'erfs' so have learned something today!

The traditional way to remember the weird pronunciation of oeuf/oeufs it is that "one egg is always enough" (pronounced in a put-on French accent).

It sounds like your French teacher just isn't very good at spelling (which in fairness, a lot of french people aren't! It's a harder language to spell than English).

And it's

Œuf

with œ not "o" and "e" if you really want to show off.

You can find "œ" by keeping the "o" pressed until it reveals all the possible permutations.

Öòøō etc

And yes as was said above the "f" isn't pronounced in the plural form.
