Sand shoes when I was at primary (West Scotland). Now DD is at primary I call them a waste of money as they hardly seem to get worn as they do PE in their bare feet!

TrueToYou · 07/02/2014 11:06

Pumps. East Lancashire (North West England)

AlpacaLypse · 07/02/2014 11:11

Now this is interesting. I called them plimsolls when I was a child, that's what my parents, teachers and the other children called them. When I changed from a private school to a state school in the same town, they were called daps instead. This was in the 1970's in NE Wilts.

My own daughters are now at the same state school and call them daps.

MrsCosmopilite · 07/02/2014 11:12

Plimsoles. I'm from London. I used to buy these in Woolworths and wear them for PE at Primary school.

AlpacaLypse · 07/02/2014 11:13

I remember on the children's primary school uniform/PE kit list they were called gym shoes though.

Bumpsadaisie · 07/02/2014 11:56

Pumps. North West.

Bumpsadaisie · 07/02/2014 11:57

Is Pumps just a north west thing, then?

People who call them plimsolls, would you have understood "pumps"

NinjaPenguin · 07/02/2014 13:20

Plimsolls- Essex
I would've understood pumps, because a classmate (born and bred Essex too) called them pumps.

(P.E) Pumps - west Midlands

ReginaldBlinker · 07/02/2014 13:37

I've never seen shoes like this before, but I suppose I'd call them canvas slip-on shoes.

Pumps are high heels, and plimsolls are white canvas with laces (also called Keds, even if they're not that brand)

Plimsolls - Greater London/ Surrey.

Though I am a teacher and have a mental block when it comes to the name when I'm actually looking at the blasted things I call them flippers! I am often telling the children before P.E. to put their flippers on Confused
