Fascinating fact, couldn't resist posting

Plimsolls were made from Gutta percha, a non latex bendy material from a tree. It was over harvested in the 1850s and the supply chain broke down, which meant shoes had to be made from rubber. Gutta percha is not latex based like rubber as it comes from a different genus of plant. It is used for medical purposes now. This is probably the origin of the word Gutties.

almapudden · 25/05/2014 09:56

Plimsolls. Or indoor shoes, because we had to wear them indoors at primary school. Kent.

Shopgirl1 · 28/05/2014 11:28

Pumps, Wrexham

Have been in Ireland for the last 30 years though, don't have a specific name for these here, other than runners, which fits all trainers.

2 Boab sliders!

farewellfigure · 21/07/2014 13:22

I call them daps, as I'm from S Wales. But my parents call them tackies and I never knew why. Now I do. 3 posters called them tackies so far and they're all from Africa. My parents lived there for 11 years. I learned something new today Grin.

Now I'm in Surrey, so they're pumps.

EvenBetter · 14/08/2014 13:45

Gutties/school gutties. Northern Ireland. However, my husband who grew up 8 miles from me would call them plimsolls, and trainers are called gutties. FFS.
