Am completely broadminded but just can't stomach Hollywood boy-meets-girl drivel ... I would, however, consider Roadtrip (for example) to be a good Hollywood film so I am not dismissing the genre entirely. But my cup of tea leans slightly more towards arty independent type films and/or foreign language things

Please help me build up my list!

I am posting to mark my place only!

The Lives of Others was so good that, after I saw it, it went on in my dream. And plus the bloke who made it is about fifteen. It's one of the few movies I've ever seen that's as good as a book (in terms of experience that stays with you and makes its cosy home in your head).

What's that lovely one with the pregnant cop? The Minnesota one. Name of a place that ends in "o".

When I get round to LoveFilm we are going to have a Peter Sellers festival, with Dr Strangelove and the Pink Panthers. And Being There, I suppose, too.

Fargo, Bink.

Many thanks for all those who recommended Lust/Caution (hence my namechange ) - twas excellent.

Not really for LoveFilm but The Wave is on iplayer at the moment and I thought it was quite good.

I loved the Lives of Others. Amazing.

I have a friend who's a film critic and his recommendations have been fab. My favourite recently was "Together", A Danish film about a 1970s commune - gorgeous, funny, sweet.

@Bink - Fargo

I've just seen The White Ribbon and thought it was very good. Recent film but shot in German, b&w, set just prior to WW1.

Julie Delpy's 2 Days in Paris would be right up your street.

It's brilliantly written, bittersweet and funny. It's about love but definitely not the Hollywood kind. It's about how we change in relationships and how we love.

Bloody brilliant!

wow! This thread has gone on and on! Thanks for some amazing suggestions. I've got high hopes for your recommendation LittleCheesy - how great to have a film critic as a pal
