Which we saw at thw w/e , and which is unfortunately over.

Mark Hearld had a room called the Magpie Eye just full of his work , other people's , and just stuff
It was wonderful.
As were the Bawden and Ravillious, who influenced him.
He makes prints, ceramics and fabric
Has anyone else heard of him?

No, but as Bawden and Ravilious are two of my favourite artists, I ought to have. Will investigate further...

I did laugh when your link went to St Judes - they seem to have a finger in a lot of pies, they've published some lovely related books - but we're also always competing against one of them for stuff on eBay!

northernrefugee39 · 07/05/2009 19:24

Ha! What do they compete with you over?- you must have great taste because they do have lovely things.

I really like Jeff Fisher- a friend of mime used to represent him briefly, he's a great designer.
And Johnny Hannah is one of my favourite illustrators/printmakers too.

I meant to say that I think ( but not sure) some of the work is in a permanent collection at the Fry Gallery in Saffron Walden.

Oooh yes, Jonny Hannah - we bought his Jazz book recently - for ourselves rather than DD. And I am very much liking what I see of Mark Hearld on that page too. Can't find the Jeff Fisher, but will google him anon.

The John Burningham poster a couple of entries below the Magpie Eye entry on St Judes is the kind of thing we collect - it's wartime and postwar graphics, mostly posters. It's a lot cheaper than buying fine art, and the posters of that era are some of the best ever made (or at least I think so). We (that's in a my husband and I kind of way, as we're both implicated) really like Tom Eckersley and have quite a few of his. When Simon Lewin doesn't pip us to the post on t'Bay that is (although, to be fair, he may have bought stuff from us too!)

But I was starting to feel they were everywhere - I bought a book from Amazon last week (a reprint of a 50s book about farming [geek alert]). Lovely cover, I thought - it was Angie Lewin!

Sadly they are about as far away from us as you can get in Britain without falling off the edge, as we're in the SW...

I love John Burningham as an illustrator.
That whole post war era was so rich and varied.
I'm also very fond of Ardizzonne too in that old fashioned way; and they were all so talented in different areas- when you see ravillious and Bawden and the scope and variation of their work, - their war artist stuff and prints, fabric, ceramics etc.
Some of Bawden's was really very cartoony too, I hadn't really clocked that.

Angie Lewin's stuff is lovely- very influenced by Bawden ravillious though.
Is Richard Bawden a grandson do you think?

Like you and Johnny Hannah's Jazz- which I love too, these are the sort of books I buy for myself now because my dc's are too old for them...
Miroslav Sasek, the This is series
I saw some recently, in a trendy gifty shop in Brighton, but not the whole series.
I think the Britain , London and Paris ones are easy to get hold of though.

Duh- just seen on the site I linked to- you can get most of them. Oh dear.....

Yes, we've got the Britain one too, just for ourselves. There's also a brilliant one we were given:

this which is lovely, although the version of 'Who Killed Cock Robin doesn't pull any punches!

Have a look at the rennies site too. They are fearfully overpriced these days, but have some lovely originals. It's amazing how much prices have gone up - I've got two 'High Street' prints, which I bought about ten years ago, but I'd never be able to afford them now!

northernrefugee39 · 08/05/2009 11:31

Oh that Rennies site is wonderful! Thanks!
The Bawden wall papers are gorgeous.
I love Edward Mcknight Kauffer - they remind me of a cross between Ben Nicholson and Kurt Shwitters.

Yes, McKnight Kauffer is at the top end of the market, so we only have one tiny thing of his!

I used to walk past this every day when I was a student, and your description of him fits that exactly.

northernrefugee39 · 10/05/2009 17:35

Hi vonsudenfed!
Ah well- one tiny McKnight Kauffer made me smile!
My dh buys paintings in a haphazard way and has picked up some fab stuff.

Do you know/like Julian Trevellyan ?
I love his paintings Julian Trevelyan
He was married to/ partner with Mary Feddon who seemed to be more commercial and better known.
