Chess - what happens when only king is left?

Wasn't sure where to put this. No general "games" section and it's not a sport...

I have tried googling this, before I get a JFGI response.

DS wants to know what you do if your king is the only piece left, and is OK where he is sitting but would put himself in check by moving a square in any other direction.

Do you have to move him?
Is that check mate?

I ought to know this but I don't.

Is that Stalemate?

RustyBunny · 29/03/2009 17:22

That's stalemate - it's a draw.

Here

UnquietDad · 29/03/2009 17:24

But it's not stalemate, is it, because stalemate is when nobody can move?...

oh, Ok - just read meerkat's link. Maybe not.

No, it is stalemate when one player can't move

"Stalemate is a situation in chess where the player whose turn it is to move is not in check but has no legal moves"

UnquietDad · 29/03/2009 17:26

thanks

DS: "fanks"

Well, strictly speaking, it is a situation where no one can move - the lone king can't move because you're not allowed to put yourself in check & the other player can't move because it's not their turn.

Quattrocento · 29/03/2009 17:34

It's not a stalemate but it is a draw

RustyBunny · 29/03/2009 17:44

It is stalemate -from your link: "stalemate (when the player to move has no legal move and is not in check)"

The lone king has no legal move, because he cannot put himself in check, but he is not currently in check.

Sorry, didn't read the OP properly. Thought you were talking about an endgame when there were two kings left but no other pieces. You are quite right.
