PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 19:52

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 20:34

you dont know what you are missing!

or are you culture vultures at the RAH in person??

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 20:35

Ooh, thanks for reminder - switching on now (though I've prob missed most of it).

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 20:41

it has been really good - think you will have just tuned in for the last piece - an Amercian in Paris. That piece takes me back 20 + years

The new piece just finished was great - maybe download it from iplayer? the whole concert is worth it.

wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 20:45

I LOVE American in Paris!

Only caught the last five minutes of the new piece but it looked very good. I missed the Bernstein too , so will def be checking iPlayer tomorrow.

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 20:51

you see the percussionists?!

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 20:54

I did! Every time I watch an orchestra I always want to be a percussionist; it looks so cool.

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 20:55

I always wanted to play the harp - for some strange reason lol

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 20:57

Oh yes, something very glamorous and ethereal about the harp. See, that guy playing the xylophone is having so much fun there.

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 20:59

unlike the bassoonist on the end - she looks bored out of her mind!

poor trumpetter just split her solo -

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 21:02

Oh, I cringed for the trumpeter - that is such a big note too. Lol I keep looking out for the bassoonist now.

wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 21:03

I'm strangely fascinated by the conducting ruffles on the conductor's shirt - ruffling along to the music.

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 21:06

yes I do like his outfit - esp the shirt!!

trumpeter is doing ok now though!

I do love this piece. I think things you learn as a child/teen in great detail with great conductors stick with you

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 21:09

She recovered brilliantly, I thought.

Did you study music then, PCNASWM?

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 21:12

no, erm yes, erm not really - sensitive subject!!

it's over now

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 21:17

Oh, sorry, didn't mean to touch a nerve.

I often wonder how things might have been different if I'd done A-Level Music. I was discouraged from doing it because it wasn't 'useful' .

Doesn't stop me listening and enjoying it though. I think it's great that there's much better TV Proms coverage than there used to be as well.

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 21:20

lol dont worry!!

I am sorry you were discoouraged from doing A level music - it was good

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 21:25

Friends did it, and I sort of vicariously followed the syllabus with them. And I was in the choir, so I got my music kicks that way .

Heck of a lot of Messaien this year, isn't there? Is he your bag? I find it interesting to listen to, but must admit I wouldn't think of bunging some on for relaxation.

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 21:39

oh no not messaien - not my thing. I rememebr playing the Turengalia symphony (sp) when he came to the UK - I rememebr thinking what a load of noise

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 21:39

Ha ha, yes, I'll listen to ten minutes and then reach for the Mozart .

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 21:41

I am a Baroque girl - but really my tastes are varied - so long as there is a tune lol

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 21:51

Yes, I've got that retro thing of liking a tune with my music . I'd love to know what you play but I'm much too polite to ask, of course... I bet strings.

PCNASWM · 09/08/2008 21:57

yes I am a viola player

OP posts:
wessexgirl · 09/08/2008 22:00

Tons of lovely baroque music for you then . I had a massive crush on one of the viola players in the local orchestra when I was younger, so the viola will always retain a nostalgic charm for me...

Have to go now, but it's been lovely Promming with you! Hope to do it again sometime .
