Is it really difficult?

Can you read music?

If you can then I think it would be not too horrendously difficult

I agree with Katiemac about reading music. I also think some instruments are easier then others.

A class / lessons would help. I went to a guitar class several years ago and leant quite a lot over 10 weeks but I really only remember three chords now and I get by with them.

Recently - since September, I have been playing an Autoharp and that has been easier than the guitar but it is mostly self taught

I learned to read music at school, because we had to for singing lessons, but I would be very, very rusty.

Pruni had you played something else as a child?

I'm learning to play the piano. I can't read music and have never learned any instrument before.

I am very slow. But I like it.
I've done the first beginner book, which included great pieces such as jingle bells, yankee doodle, and this old man.

Everyone in my house hates me.

I got to grade 5 cello starting at the age of 25. I couldn't read music at the start.

I was single though! It was really interesting. IT does take a lot of time.

I think unfretted string instruments are quite hard because you have to work out from scratch and without knowing what is an 'A' etc.

Worth it though. I felt fab when I scratched my way through a bit of Bach suite

FrayedKnot · 30/06/2008 21:20

Boco I didn;t realize...how often do you practise?

I would like to learn to play the violin. I reckon it's the most impossible one to learn, though.

And my whole street would hate me.

I learnt to play the piano at 27, got to grade 7 in two years. I already had grade 8 on the clarinet and grade 5 theory from my schooldays, so I was able to concentrate on the piano rather than learning music theory.

What instrument do you want to lean to play and what is your instrument playing history?

FrayedKnot · 30/06/2008 21:22

Do you think violin more difficult than cello?

I am heartened by the cello stories.

sorry x'd posts.

How about viola - a mellower sound - may not penetrate the walls as much as violin

Go for it FrayedKnot I think you should definitely do it.

How much time do you need to give it, realistically, do you think?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 30/06/2008 21:30

Are you having lessons? if so maybe 10 minutes a day

If not maybe 20-30 mins a day?

I saw a fabulous hand-written sign in our local newsagent's window. It said something like...

"Bought a harp in a moment of madness. Is there anyone locally who can teach me how to play it?"

pointydog · 30/06/2008 21:54

I've been teachign myself a few tunes on the ukulele. It's very easy peasy.

Depnds what you want to play and your expectations

FrayedKnot · 30/06/2008 21:59

Hmm, would have to have lessons

Oh I found someone who teaches the harp near me, Soren...

I was tempted but for the fact that I could probably hire a violin to begin with and it would be easier to find space for.

Also I do not have flowing treacle coloured locks, which I think a prerequisite for harp playing.

I'm not musical

pointydog · 30/06/2008 22:02

oh really? Thanks prunes. I might look that up.

FrayedKnot · 30/06/2008 22:03

Oh, ukelele, Pointy!

Can you do any George Formby?

My Grandpa used to play..in fact I think my Mum has his old one somewhere.

I would have to temper my expectations, I suspect.
