The Tempest : introduction for a 9 and 11yr old

My parents (bless their optimistic old hearts ) want to take my eldest 2 to see an outdoor production of The Tempest. They also wanted to take DS#2 - once I stopped laughing and picked myself up off the floor, I advised them not to. I was put off when my eldest child screamed all the way through As you Like It at 13 months old (he clearly didn't) and I hadn't bitten the bullet again as yet. However I want some way to familarise them with the story before they get bemused by the language. Can anyone think of a modern re-telling of the story - film or book - that might help?

Oh come on! Bloody MN . Can tell you exactly what sort of orgasm you've had, what pair and shade of shoes to buy, where to buy them and how much to pay and exactly how to give the best bj ever.... but apparently you can't cope with a teeny weeny Shakespeare question.

I thought better of you

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/english/shakespeare_sums/tempest_summ_intro.shtml

This might help. There are several book versions - the Leon Garfield might be a bit old fashioned but The Book people do a set including "The Tempest" or you could have a look at the RSC online shop.

popsycal · 06/06/2008 20:32

cbbc ony has midsummer's nights dream
but you can get animated shakespeare dvds

popsycal · 06/06/2008 20:32

There's a BBC cartoon version of some Shakespeare tales - each lasts about 20 mins. V~ery very old, but they're great. Includes a Tempest which my 4 yo enjoys (but wouldn't be too babyish I wouldn't think)

No idea where you'd track them down though

Humm, helpful eh?

janeite · 06/06/2008 20:34

The dvd is also available on the RSC online shop. It's very well done - it's done with puppets.

Bink · 06/06/2008 20:34

There's also the lovely Marcia Williams but that might almost be too young for 9 & 11.

Otherwise - re-read it yourself & remember the good bits, & give them tasters - eg Full fathom five said at them in a spooky way.

Make sure they have a good big bag of sweeties.

OrmIrian · 06/06/2008 20:34

I'll try the BBC shop website thing. Thanks funny.

popsycal · 06/06/2008 20:40

OrmIrian · 06/06/2008 20:48

I've managed to order a copy of the animated tales - just the Tempest and Hamlet. And some sort of Tales from Shakespeare by Anna Clayburn.

Thankyou all!
