Has anyone been to the Lee Miller exhibition at Tate Britain? What’s it like how long would you recommend to allow to have a good look round? TIA

I went - loved it, but I'm a bit of a fan. It covers all phases of her life so if you like fashion, surrealist & war photography you'll enjoy it. Husband just liked the war bit but felt it was worth going just for that. He whizzes around exhibitions so he was done within half an hour but I soak them up so was in there for more like 1.5 hrs. We watched the film Lee soon after which was a good companion watch!

Thank you! I’m a fan of all her work, so will likely take my time. It’s very useful to know how long it can take.

I didn't know that this was on. I find her a fascinating character and really enjoyed the Lee Miller's War exhibition at the V&A some years ago, so I will definitely try and get to this one.

I missed the V &A exhibition, so I really wanted to make sure I went to this one. Hope you get there @NeedWineNow

Just tried to get tickets for tomorrow and it is all sold out - book ahead!

I think we took a bit less than 90 mins but were certainly over an hour. It was sold out on the day we went and the volume of people certainly had an impact on how quickly you could go around.
It was the first time I’d been to the Tate Britain for years. They have one cafe in the basement which had sold out of 90% of the items on the menu by 1.30pm which was rather frustrating as the things left didn’t particularly appeal. I don’t know if that is typical or not.

I can’t wait - I’m a member so will go and see if in next few weeks.

We went on Monday. I hadn't anticipated how big it was going to be. It's amazingly complete and really engrossing.

It’s good and it covers many rooms. I should think we took 60-90 minutes to go round.

Divebar2021 · 26/11/2025 17:56

I went yesterday as a member. I’m not sure the last exhibition I did which was purely photography- probably the 80’s one which I did not like much. Really enjoyed this one though - she was quite some woman. It’s a big exhibition - there’s quite a lot pre Man Ray which surprises me. The most harrowing of the war photography was limited to one particular room and I almost missed it.

Spoiler!

I found the exhibition really well judged although as always I wish they'd actually write the ages of the people involved when the work was produced.

Come on Man Ray, Frida Kahlo's &Georgia O'keefes husbands how old are you compared to these young artists.

I was a big Lee Miller fan and have been following the growing profile of the archive for now decades!
My reaction to the war photography, particularly the last days really helped empathise with Lee's long term change of direction afterwards. The last room with it's post war celebrity photos was necessary to understand it and it was a shock how unimportant it all felt after taking my time over the build up and success of her pre war career.

Thanks for posting this. I was looking for something to do in London on Thursday and noticed this thread. The exhibition was very interesting and I really enjoyed it - spent 2 hours there!! I also really enjoyed the film Lee which was recommended by a pp.
