it's my birthday this month and i think i'd like to spend it by going to london for the day and going to see a show. my daughter loves music and dancing and has been to the theatre and cinema quite a few times so as long as it's good she'll sit nicely. (eg she loved the snowman and the gruffallo at the theatre). i was wondering about doing the lion king but it says it's not reccommended for children under 5, and no under 3s allowed. anyone taken a 3/4year old and how was it? anyone got any alternatives?

I took my 6 year old and would say that was the youngest you should take.

There was somneone sitting close to me with two young children aged about 3 and 5. Just before the interval when Simba's dad died they were sobbing hysterically. They didn't come back for the second half. I've seen the Gruffalo and the Lion King is aimed much older it's also twice as long.

I'm actually going to take my ds aged 4 to see Hairspray but only because he has watched the film (about a million times) and he adores it, it seems cruel for the rest of us to go and leave him behind when he is so obsessed by it. I'm hoping some bits will go over his head!!! I wouldn't take him if he didn't know the film very well already. It's a real feel good type film/show with some fabulous songs and dances.

The Lion King is VERY long. I took DD1 and 2 when they were 8 and 6 respectively but left DD3 who was 3 with DH. The first half is about half an hour too long IMO.
We all went to see the Sound of Music when DD3 was four and she enjoyed it immensely.
