Recorder book for beginner age 5

Anyone got any good recommendations of recorder books for a beginner? They don't start it at school until Year 2, but DD1 is keen so I see no reason not to start her at home. Just not sure what book to get - Recorder Magic? The Aulos one? Anyone?!

There is a good tutor book we use for our year 3s(some of whom are VERY special needs) called "Red Hot Recorder" I think you can get a backing track for it too to play along with. It's one of the best we have found.

Try here really good music store on line.

Make sure she learns on a good quality recorder to avoid the ear plugs. The aulos 205 is the best I've found. For goodness sake avoid those dreadful squeaky things they sell in places like the early learning centre or mothercare!

Also do makesure she has her hands the right way round (left hand at the top) I have had some kids who have learned with right hand at the top and then had real problems when they wanted to transfer onto a flute or clarinet.

Just read that again-Didn't mean your dd was special needs just that a 5 year old would be likely to cope with the book!

Oh yes I remember that one too. Makes me feel very nostalgic (and very old!)

Recorder from the beginning is good too but I do feel that the songs in red hot recorder are more appealing to little ones.

Thanks!

So Smartiejake, if we went for Red Hot Recorder, would we just need this book www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/080128/details.html or would we need the teachers one as well?

Is Book 2 green? I may have that at my parents' house still I think! (As a Cornishwoman, I approve of your choice of piece! )

Book 3 was v tricky - could never get the really high notes. Book 1 was falling apart, book 2 in OK condition, book 3 pristine!

Jura - me too, just had a big nostalgia rush looking at recorder book 1! My mum, my sister and I all used to play together and I remember it as being great fun, and also a brilliant way to learn to read music without realising. I'm just starting to think about this for my DD1 who is 5 (6 in a few weeks)as I'm sure I started when I was about 5. Was all ready to go and buy a recorder, then I saw a pink ukulele in the music shop window, and now I'm dithering... 9would quite like a pink ukulele myself...)

smartiejake · 15/05/2008 15:42

There would be no need to get the teacher's book and the pupil book. The teachers book will have all the tunes from the student book but with some extra hints. If you are not a music teacher it might be quite useful. But if you can play the recorder I would just get the student copy with the cd.
I never bother with teacher books for teaching the recorder ( but there again I am a music teacher.)

islandofsodor · 17/05/2008 22:57

I got recorder from the beginning for dd.

I did get the teachers book because it contains the piano accompaniments and dd loves playing along with me.

I'm also feeling nostalgic for The School Recorder book!!!!!!

I agree with getting a good quality recorder. Dd started to learn at home woith me forst but when she started school they specified one of two aulos ones. Most got the slightly cheaper version but the tone on dd's is so much nicer and encourages her to play it moer.

MrsJohnCusack · 17/05/2008 23:02

I've still got my copy of the School Recorder Book too!

and second getting a decent recorder (ytou will feel the benefit too)

Dh wanted dd to have a wooden one but the shop owner persuaded us that they were harder to look after than plastic.

I lent my old aulos one out a few years ago and never got it back!!!!
