Just wondering, as i recently met the bass player from a band i've always loved, and he was a bit of a rude old git!

Bit disappointed really. Anyone else?

I met Peter Gabriel and he was lovely.

really lovely.

I heart him even more.

southeastastra · 07/04/2008 11:46

who was it misfit?!

totalmisfit · 07/04/2008 11:55

ah just some obscure old sixties guy. not someone most people would have heard of, but i think meeting him meant a lot to me because i've kind of grown up listening to the band he was in, and i suppose you expect people who were cool back then to at least be vaguely, i don't know what the word is...friendly? civil?

Squonk - peter Gabriel- that's pretty cool

I met Rufus Wainwright after a concert once and he was LOVELY. Friendly and charming and just generally wonderful!

Eddie Izzard was a grumpy old sod though

totalmisfit · 07/04/2008 12:02

Rufus Wainwright? now i'm jealous

I met Blyth Tait (NZ eventer - now retired) when I was 11, I was struck dumb - completely....I must have looked like a really red goldfish

He was so nice to me though, and had a chat with me when I came round!

uttertripe · 07/04/2008 12:06

i do feel sorry ( a bit) for people who have to be on top form, mood-wise, and polite and funny and witty and friendly at ALL TIMES so that every single person they meet comes away with a good impression of them.
how v tiring.

ExtraFancy · 07/04/2008 14:40

Yes uttertripe, but if that person is doing a signing/meet-and-greet, surely it helps....

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2008 14:48

Eddie Izzard was grumpy ?? nooo, I love him - Ican't bear to think that...

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2008 14:49

I've met Armistead Maupin who is probably my favourite author a few times at signings and he was charming - I on the other hand was pathetically star struck so he probably thought me an idiot.

DontCallMeBaby · 07/04/2008 14:51

Hm, the only person that fits the bill would be Nelson Mandela (hero/person admired) and he was about the furthest thing possible from a grumpy old git. Well, he was old (even 12 years ago he was old, and frailer than I'd realised). He came over to winkle me and my colleagues out from where we were hiding, and insisted on shaking our hands.

DJCod · 07/04/2008 14:52

i spoke to Justine ont he phone
utter utter diappointment. you could SMELL common donw the phone.

hellsbells76 · 07/04/2008 15:26

yeah, eddie izzard was a right arse with me too. but then again i was a drunken fawning student at the time...

maidamess · 07/04/2008 15:28

No, but if I ever meet George Michael I will wet myself.

GrapefruitMoon · 07/04/2008 15:33

I was thinking along these lines recently - wondering if it is possible to be a great artist/musician/writer, etc and still be a nice person. So many of that ilk seem to be incapable of sustaining good relationships, for example, or treat their families badly.

I think it was triggered by reading the book "Notes on an Exhibition" and it reminded me of a documentary I saw once on Barbara Hepworth who put her triplets into care when they were little so that she could (allegedly) concentrate on her art.... Then there are the actors like Marlon Brando and Robert de Niro, Picasso, Hemingway,,,,

I heard a writer I like give an interview on radio once and found her voice really irritating.....

tryingtocookacurry · 07/04/2008 15:37

grapefruitmoon, I just read that book - it's fab!

GrapefruitMoon · 07/04/2008 15:45

Yes I loved it too - had never heard of the author before but he seems to have written quite a few books - have you read any others of his?

tryingtocookacurry · 07/04/2008 19:41

no, I haven't.
My mum passes her books down to me, so I read what I'm given, but usually I enjoy the same books as her.
I wanted a better ending though, I felt a bit let down. I wanted to know more about how the son died.

eemie · 07/04/2008 20:47

Mary Ann Singleton - Armistead Maupin! And great name btw

ranting · 07/04/2008 20:56

Met Jarvis, had a drink with him actually and happy to report, he's bloody lovely. Can't say I think that way about Damon TWAT Albarn, who I've also crossed paths with but that's life.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2008 22:43

thanks eemie

totalmisfit · 08/04/2008 13:03

ranting - god i used to love damon (twat) albarn when i was about 16. looking back, i really don't know why, makes me cringe!

Grapefruitmoon - i have been wondering that too... the music/art/books i love the most all seems to have been created by the most difficult people (if we are to believe what's said about them). I think the thing that occurred to me at this gig where i met the aforementioned grumpy git, was that part of the reason it was so disappointing was that i wanted him to be like his songs...or make me feel the way his songs made me feel... if that makes any sense?

Magnus Magnussan was utterly charming... and very small. Ok I wasnt a fan as such , but it meant I wasnt completely starstruck. Have had opportunities to talk with heroes of mine and completely lost my voice, went bright red and felt sick!

UnquietDad · 10/04/2008 13:44

I met Magnus too, newshmoo. He was a great bloke, very self-deprecating and amusing.
